Spring's Herbal Magick: Making Traditional & Modern Folk Charms

The tying of knots, the hanging of bundles of herbs, the collecting of charms into some sort of jar are all old forms of traditional magick used by common folk for millennia - likely including some of your ancestors. 

Simple, accessible, and known by a variety of names, charms like witch's ladders, spell jars, and herbal bundles, remain popular forms of magick to this day because they are easy to create and fulfill that need to feel like you are doing something when making your magick. 

I'm fond of folk magick not only because it is the form of magick I feel most at home with but because it so often involves plants - of which I am quite fond of, too. Folk magick has its own language and rhythm, full of ideas like the doctrine of signatures (which supposes that what an object looks like - its signature - tells you what it is useful for), ancestral myths transformed into easily digestible fables, family folktales, and a belief that we have power in our interconnectedness to create change.

I want to spend some time drawing on these folk magick inspirations to explore a pathway of herbal magick flowing through the seasons of the year. We'll work with three common forms of physical folk magick each season, exploring the same arts of magick through the lens of the changing year, beginning with spring. With each charm I'll focus on one plant ally to incorporate into your magickal working, helping to inspire your magickal herbalism practice. Finally, what I love about these crafts of the Craft is the way they can be shaped and formed to reflect our personal styles and desires, creating ways of reflecting the beauty of our inner world to the world around us.

What is wonderful about most types of folks magick is that they have a foundational form (a bottle filled with stuff) that can be used for a variety of purposes (a bottle full of stuff to help us get our dream job). The folk magick items we'll be exploring can be used in a variety of ways, including as:

• Gifts and offerings

• Acts of devotion, creating an item for a particular deity or spirit of place

• Connections to ancestors by integrating cultural relevant plants and items

• Decorations for sabbats and esbats

• Containers for a specific sort of energy

So let's explore how we can create Witch's Ladders, Bundles, and Bottles as one of the ways to connect with the seasonal rhythms of the year and our beloved plant allies.

The Witch's Ladder

Traditionally made of woolen cord, rope, woven thread or hair and knotted with items like feathers, holed stones, sticks and bits of metal, witch's ladders are a beautiful form of magick that combine charm-making with knot magick and weaving spells. The witch's ladder has remained popular among modern practitioners, supported in part by the Priestess Doreen Valiente's Spell of the Cord, an inspired modern variation of older forms of spoken knot magick. Energetically, they can act like a net, gathering up energy to hold in place and to either be drawn upon (in the case of beneficial energy) or released elsewhere (in the case of baneful energy).

I think my own exposure to the witch's ladder was through the work of Scott Cunningham in one of his books on folk magick - it's remained one of my favorite forms of charm-making ever since.¹ Witch's ladders can be made with all sorts of things, so long as you are able to tie them with your cord. You can focus on fully biodegradable components (essential if you're making a ladder that is going to be hung and left outside to naturally fall apart) or small plastic figurines alongside wooden coins carved with sigils, crystals, and feathers. They are a wonderful way to create a visual reminder of your craft and intentions while the skill of co-current charm speaking and working. 

I love simple cords for my witch's ladders, but the re-vitalization of crafts like macrame has meant that the practice of making witch's ladders is as much an art form as it is a practical bit of magick. I think starting simple is best - frustration can be cumbersome to magickal ritual - but I recommend seeking out the ladder-making practice that will allow you to slip into as much of a flow state as possible as you make it. 

A Witch’s Ladder To Stir Up Energy

Spring is a season of growing energy and as magickal folk we can connect to the rising tide of possibility with a simple witch's ladder that helps to stir up and collect energy. Spring's ladder acts like a simple net to gather energy so that you can draw upon it for your spells and rituals. I think all witch's ladders benefit from bells, but I especially like bells on one for spring to connect with the noise of the season of increasing light and life. 

Dandelion Leaves (Taraxacum officinale) are the plant ally we'll be working with for spring because they not only resemble feathers traditionally used for a witch's ladder, but carry a strong energy of air and the gifts of movement, communication, and stirring up energy. Dandelion is a plant that is both expansive and grounding - a great combination for working with spring's mercurial nature. As part of your ladder-making ritual, you could name each leaf for the type of energy you want to bring into your life as you braid them into your ladder, such as energy for a certain project, energy to clear out stagnation, energy for love, energy for boundaries, and so on. When working with Dandelion as a magickal plant ally it helps to approach them with the energy of wishfulness, whispering to them what it is you desire as you craft your spell.

Other plants like sticky Cleavers (Galium aparine) and bright shining Calendula (Calendula officinalis) can be added, but consider what you have available, the plants that are growing around you (or one's saved up from last spring's harvest that need using), and enjoy the process of using what you have at hand. Flowering plants as well as flower shaped objects (including beads and paper flowers), orange and yellow colored stones or items, and bells are all great items to consider for your spring witch's ladder. 

Creating Your Ladder

To create a witch's ladder use cord, thread or yarn to braid or not your chosen objects into a long hanging cord. How long you make your witch's ladder is up to you, but I find that they work better when shorter when being hung outside and can be a bit longer when keeping it inside. I like to start by laying out all objects I'll be tying into my witch's ladder before me on my altar, blessing them with the four elements of fire (candle light), air (incense), water (water infused with flower essences or salt), and earth (sprinkling herbs over the items or laying the items on a stone surface). I like to use some variation of a cord charm when knotting my items, like Valiente's or the one written above, changing the language for my needs. 

Once all items are added, the witch's ladder can be hung up by an altar, window or door. For a spring witch's ladder I like to make ones that'll either hang just outside my door or beside a window, so that the ladder is able to dance in spring's winds.

The Witch's Bundle

The simplest of our three traditional folk magick charms, a witch's bundle is a collection of exclusively or mostly plants with other items (such as old skeleton keys, a nice stick, a hunk of rock) tied up together and hung up above a door (or bed or other auspicious place). I make bundles throughout the year and they double as offerings once they've dried and I can burn them as incense or toss them in a sabbat fire. Some of the oldest types of witch's bundles that I've come across were meant for protection, from protecting a house from lightning and fire to hanging above the crib of a newborn to protect them from malevolent energies (but please be wise about anything you put above or around a crib if you're interested in this folk practice). In general, bundles help to hold energy, sticking it to a specific place or intention. 

Nowadays witch's bundles are used for all sorts of magickal desires from drawing in good fortune to cleansing energy. I love the ways that these bundles of herbs and other charms help to dress up our homes and bring a bit of the outside in. I have magickal bundles hanging throughout my own space, but I also have practical ones of herbs that I use frequently and can draw from daily when making teas or burning as incense. Bundles can also be taken down from where they are hanging and used to "brush" and cleanse the energetic body in place of or alongside incense. 

Witch's bundles, like all of the magickal crafts listed here, can be endlessly personalized to match your need, your aesthetic preferences, and reflect your relationships. If you're studying a particular plant ally you might include them in your witch's bundle (if the herb has already been dried and processed, you can add some into a little pouch and tie it to your bundle). If you are working with a deity that is fond of one particular color, choose that color of cloth or string to tie up your bundle. If you're a cool goth witch, add the skulls and gothic crosses to your bundle of dried Rose (Rosa spp.). Let yourself enjoy the process of finding your creative magickal expression - it helps you understand better what it you're using magick for in the first place.

A Witch's Bundle for Balance

Spring is one of two seasons that carries the energy of the equinox, helping us to connect with the spirit of balance within and around us. As long nights retreat with the passing of winter and longer days arrive with the start of spring, making sure to invite in energy that helps us feel grounded, centered, and steady will help us to thrive during this season of expansiveness. For spring I like to create witch’s bundles that help me to stay connected to my sense of equilibrium so I can enjoy the increase of the season’s energy without feeling overwhelmed. 

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is one of my favorite herbs for finding balance between our inner world and the world around us. Lemon Balm is a beautiful nervous system tonic or nervine, a key type of plant to work with when you want to find and cultivate balance in your life. Energetically, Lemon Balm helps us to connect with the path of peace within us, understanding our relationship to the collective without becoming overwhelmed by the world. Lemon Balm is a guide through the web of life, helping us to feel secure in our needs and knowings. The herb is also traditionally used in spells to bring about love in all its forms and since finding balance in our lives is an act of love, it's a great plant ally to have around.

Other plants like Sage (Salvia spp.), Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), and Lavender (Lavandula spp.) help us to grow the inner wisdom needed within us to find balance in our lives. Adding symbols of balance such as scales, circles or triskeles, blue and purple items such as stones and ribbons, as well as any visual reminders that help you to remember to pause and connect with your inner wisdom are great additions.

Creating Your Bundle

Bless all your objects as described in the above section "Creating Your Ladder." Once you've collected all of your items (such as a bunch of Lemon Balm), use a colored thread or ribbon of choice to tie up your bundle. I like to tie the top part and leave the rest loose, but you can tie up everything from top to bottom. The advantage of the latter technique is that you can tie larger objects inside the bundle, even hiding them from view if that's your preference. Once tied up, hang the bundle above an altar, door, or window. 

The Witch's Bottle

A fair amount of my professional life involves putting plants in bottles, storing them for when they're needed, handing out jars full of tea to friends and family, toting bottles full of tinctures and flower essences back and forth to classes. It's no surprise then that witch's bottles have a soft spot in my heart. Witch's bottles of old were often protective or vindictive in nature, containing all sorts of interesting ingredients from rusty nails to hair to urine. I remember reading about them as a kid and connecting with just how visceral witchcraft could be - how this art of connecting with the intangible relied so much on the deeply tangible body of the practitioner.

Traditionally, witch's bottles or jars were buried or hidden away from view in the back of cupboards, sometimes even between walls, beneath floors, or high up in the attics. They embody the magickal practice of doing the work and then letting it be, allowing the magick to continue to unfold in its own time. Sometimes jars are made for a short period of need (such as a honey jar for attracting a job) and then the contents are offered back to the earth, while others are more permanent and meant to be mostly forgotten. Other times, jars and their contents can be renewed on a regular basis (such as at the Full Moons or the sabbats). Energetically, witch's bottles tend to act like generators, helping to generate an outcome or a specific type of energy.

I know many a witch who made magickal bottles full of plants and stones in their younger witchling days, often reusing food jars and sealing them up with bits of wax or thread. It's practically a magickal rite of passage to come across an old witch's jar many years later - perhaps when moving or cleaning out a back corner of a closet - and to have completely forgotten its purpose (which I consider a good sign). Whether or not you prefer the "make it and forget it" method or like displaying your witch's bottles in a spot where you can appreciate them daily, they are a wonderful living relic of our magickal pasts carried with ease into our magickal futures.

A Witch's Bottle For Luck

Spring’s energy carries with it a wild quality of luck, where it feels like the wind might nudge you in the right direction at just the right moment for something magickal to occur. A witch’s bottle can help us keep a little luck generator going so that we can increase our possibility of an encounter with Lady Luck. A luck bottle should be full of luck-drawing and energizing components, whether cultural symbols or symbols that you find to be personally lucky. If small enough, the bottle can be carried on the person, but larger bottles can be tucked behind the altar or in a similarly hidden place so that it can do its work unhindered.

I love Lavender (Lavandula spp.) for luck magick. Carrying the energy of Mercury, brightly scented Lavender is a little luck magnet, not least of which because it strengthens our intuitive gifts, essential for moments of luck. The herb helps us to keep calm and focused while naming our needs with intention so that when luck does come our way, we are able to see it for what it is. Lavender is one of those magickal panacea herbs and helps with most any ritual or spell you might be performing, again helping us to cast a wide net for luck and possibility.

Other herbs to consider for your luck-making are Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Basil (Ocimum spp.), and Thyme (Thymus vulgaris). Any and all lucky symbols that you connect with can be added to a jar, including lucky pennies that you found while out and about and all sorts of spring flowers. Green stones, ribbons, buttons, and charms as well as magnets all do well in a luck bottle.

Creating Your Bottle

Bless all your objects as described in the above section "Creating Your Ladder." Make sure you have a tight sealing bottle or jar so to prevent items from leaking out if you are using any fluids or from pests getting in. Add your herbs and charms in one-by-one, naming their purpose as you go, and then you can seal your jar with wax or tie it up with ribbon to seal in or bind up the magick. Once completed choose where your bottle is going to live, whether in the house, mode of transportation, place of school or work or buried (especially good for banishing magick, though make sure all items are biodegradable).

My Favorite Herbs for Travel (And How to Make Your Own Herbal Travel Kit)

Before I even began studying to become an herbalist, I was carrying around tiny jars and bundles of herbs with me on my adventures around the neighborhood, to school, and almost anytime that I stepped out of the house. I tucked these herb bundles into pockets, sewed little bags into necklaces to wear them close to my heart, and flattened them between the folds of origami envelopes. I found these little bundles for years afterwards, tucked into all sorts of pockets and holding spots.

During my herbal student days, I was moving all around the country and began creating different variations of herbal travel kits, developing my remedy-making abilities and testing out what it was that I really needed (and really didn't need) on my journeys. 

While that process of trial and error with herbal travel kits (and, more broadly, herbal first aid kits), is one that remains ongoing as my needs changed over the years, there are a few types of plant allies that I always make sure to have on hand. Below, I’ve shared with you a simple list of types of plants that are my favorite to travel with when leaving the comfy corners of my own home.

For the more experienced herbal practitioners, you might find this initial list to be more than enough to inspire your herbal travel kit making. For those seeking more guidance, I've noted some of my most trusted plant allies for each category as well as other aspects of herbal travel kit making to consider and extra resources to support your project. My goal is for you to feel inspired without the overwhelm when it comes to thinking about and choosing the plant allies that will serve your healing needs best during your travels.

Not only are making herbal travel and first aid kits great ways to learn about herbalism, its a practical way to put your growing knowledge as a student herbalist to use and for practitioners, (re)creating a kit can act like a review of our practice as we reassess our needs. In the end, you'll know a bit more about useful plant allies for common complaints and have a super practical kit to bring with you on your travels.

While I’ve listed general indications for the plants listed below, as always, refer to a trusted materia medica (see some of my recommendations) or herbal practitioner to understand a plant’s contraindications and your own healing needs.

My Herbal Travel Kit

The herbal travel kit you put together will be shaped by your unique needs, but I hope that you find the following outline helpful in planning out what to bring in a way that feels simple and not like you're bringing an entire apothecary with you.

For many of us visiting family and friends, carrying a complete first aid kit that an herbal street medic might carry to a protest or gathering isn't necessary. In general, most of us need less than we think, we should always consider if we'll be able to purchase an herbal remedy if we really need it at the place we are visiting, and if we can use one herb in place of many. 

My basic traveling kit consists of:

• A first aid salve that can double as a moisturizer, but also helps heal simple cuts and abrasions. 

• A digestive aid to help keep regular during an irregular travel schedule

• A nervine-based tonic to aid in focus and help with nervous system regulation

• A sleep aid to aid with rest, sleep, and sensory issues

• An immune system aid to help prevent infection and illness

• A headache or pain tonic to alleviate inflammation and pain

Depending on the time of year you're traveling, you can review the corresponding seasonal guide for herbal remedies, from cold and flu care for winter travel to spring allergies, sun care for summer adventures and respiratory tonics for autumn journeys. You should also include those herbs that you are taking on a regular basis in your herbal travel kit, from your morning tea to herbal capsules.

While I've focused on creating a kit for travel, you can easily adapt it for keeping at work or as a mini version to carry with you on your daily commute, as a care package for friends, family or community members, or even expand it out into a more robust home family first aid kit. 

First Aid Salve

My favorite first aid salve usually includes some combination of Plantain (Plantago spp.) and Calendula (Calendula officinalis). Both are great at healing simple wounds, alleviating the irritation of bug bites, and helping to moisturize the skin. Applying salves alongside simple massage, can also be a great way to keep grounded and centered during your travels, and they can be blended with a variety of herbs and even flower essences.

Other considerations for first aid salves is whether to add stronger smelling plants or even essential oils - I typically don't because then a greater number of folks can use the salve (essential oils, even in salves and carrier oils, can be irritating to many skin types) and if I know I'll be in an enclosed space during travels or sharing accommodations, I try to avoid highly scented products.

Additional first aid plant allies include: Rose (Rosa spp.), Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), Burdock (Arctium lappa), Lavender (Lavandula spp.), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Sage (Salvia spp.), and Chamomile (Matricaria recutita).

Digestive Aid

If you've been in a consultation with an herbalist you have probably been asked a lot about your digestion and elimination - your digestive health can help an herbalist begin to understand what else is happening in your body. As you study plants and get to know your own bodily rhythms and what upsets them, you'll find that digestive plant allies play a key role in overall health. Many, many herbs support digestive health, but the following are a few of my favorite for the sort of digestive complaints that can arise from traveling.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): One of my favorite herbs to prevent motion sickness. Ginger is helpful for general indigestion, protecting against infections, and helps our body adjust to new time zones and environments. Indications include low energy, poor circulation (including caused by travel conditions), and loss of or low appetite.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): I carry a few teabags of Licorice root with me in my travel kit to support digestive health, to help with cases of food poisoning, as an immunomodulator, and as an overall rejuvenative tonic. Licorice is also a great remedy for motion sickness. Indications include digestive upset, constipation, low energy, allergies, headache, and general jet lag.

Marshmallow (Althea officinalis): For those prone to constipation or diarrhea (or a mix of both) during travel, Marshmallow can be a great ally to keep nearby. Indications include overall dryness (including dry skin, dry cough, etc.), digestive upset, constipation, and/or diarrhea.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): A great digestive aid for folks of all ages, Chamomile not only helps to alleviate intestinal cramping(and any accompanying issues with elimination, but helps with the crankiness that can occur because of the stress of travel. Indications include impatience, restlessness and irritability, intestinal cramping, teething, and general inflammation.

Additional digestive plant allies include: Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), Catnip (Nepeta cataria), Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgaris), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Lavender (Lavandula spp.), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris).

A Nervous System Tonic

I wrote a course all about nervines and sensory overload because I work with so many wonderful folks who have these incredible, sensitive, and tuned-in nervous systems (which is essentially a description of many activists, organizers, herbalists or health practitioners - no surprise!). So, it is no surprise that having one or more nervous system tonics while traveling is essential for me and I hope you find working with nervines helps you navigate travel with greater ease.

Milky Oat (Avena sativa): If I could only stock a handful of herbs in my apothecary, Milky Oat would be at the top of my list. Milky Oat is my favorite nervous system herb. As stress is an underlying factor for most of the illnesses and symptoms that I see in my practice, and gets in the way of folks being able to sit with and explore their experiences, it is a vital and beloved plant ally of mine. Milky Oat is a nervous system ​​trophorestorative making it an ideal plant ally to work with for most any nervous system needs.

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora): There can be a lot of focus needed for travel when getting from one place to another and Skullcap is one of my favorite herbs for helping to quiet anxiety and promote clearheadedness. It is also a great ally to induce sleep and to help us feel better if we happen to catch a cold. Indications include mental fatigue, loss of focus, physical exhaustion, tension headaches, and indigestion.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis): An overall great tonic herb to have around, Lemon Balm is antimicrobial, antiviral, antihistamine, and a lovely digestive tonic, all qualities you want in a plant ally travel companion. Indications include general fatigue, social exhaustion, mental weariness, and restlessness.

Additional nervous system plant allies include: Rose (Rosa spp.), Lavender (Lavandula spp.), Catnip (Nepeta cataria), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Sacred Basil (Ocimum sanctum), Vervain (Verbena spp.), and Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea). 

A Sleep Aid

Supporting our sleeping and dreaming selves shapes the ways we are able to function and connect with the world around us during our waking hours. Since travel often leads to disturbances in our normal sleep cycles - from early wake-up times to late nights, time changes and whole new sleeping environments - bringing an herbal sleep-aid with us can make our travels way more enjoyable.

In general, other herbs in my traveling kit (especially my nervous system herbs) are already supporting the work of helping me to rest and relax but sometimes we need to reach for herbs that have gentle sedating qualities to help us find sleep, a few of which I've recommended below in addition to relaxing nervines.

Passionflower (Passilora incarnata): Passionflower is excellent for those who struggle with insomnia, bringing in restful sleep, and helping you to wake up refreshed. Indications include insomnia, muscle spasms, tremors, hiccoughs, pain, inflammation, and feeling easily overheated at night.

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica): If you're looking for an herb to help reset disruptive sleep patterns but have found other herbs like Valerian (Valeriana spp.) or Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) leaving you too drowsy, California Poppy might be a good ally to work with. California Poppy is less sedating, but still relaxing, helping to draw energy downwards. Indications include insomnia, tension headaches, ADHD, and a dysregulated nervous system.

Sacred Basil (Ocimum sanctum): One of my favorite adaptogens to alleviate tension and anxiety that is contributing to restlessness and disrupting sleep cycles. Indications include excess stagnation, brain fog, weak circulation, and sore muscles.

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus): My other favorite adaptogen to help return the body back to a state of rest, whether we've been traveling for a few hours or a whole day. A wonderfully harmonizing plant ally, Eleuthero helps to reduce stress, regulate the endocrine system, and strengthen our inner vitality. Indications include hypersensitivity, nervous exhaustion, PTSD, adrenal stress, and recovering from intense physical exertion.

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora): A great nervous system tonic and rest aid for those who start to fall asleep but are woken up by anxious thoughts. Indications include anxiety, overthinking, nervous exhaustion, and neuralgia.

Additional sleep and rest plant allies include: Valerian (Valeriana spp.), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Milky Oat (Avena sativa), Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), and Lavender (Lavandula spp.).

An Immune System Tonic

I think the best way to support the immune system during travel is by taking immunostimulating or immunomodulating herbs (based on your needs) a week or so before you start traveling. Other precautions to take while travel include using physical barriers to germs like wearing a mask, frequent handwashing, and using saline nose sprays - all inexpensive and effective ways of preventing and reducing illness.

Yet, travel exposes our immune system to all sorts of challenges that can be difficult to prepare for or prevent no matter how careful, so having an immune system plant ally on hand can be a wise choice. I also tuck in a few bags of my favorite cold care tea, individually packaged for easy brewing.

Elder (Sambucus nigra): Elder, especially the Elderberry, is my favorite immunomodulator. Elder helps to disrupt a viruses' ability to replicate while also helping to strengthen the nervous system. I use Elderberry syrup as a daily tonic during the height of cold and flu season, but it is great in teas and tinctures, too. Indications include infections, fever, runny nose, excess mucus, aches and pains.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea): I don't use Echinacea often, but it is a powerful immunostimulant for short-term, acute infections. Begin taking at the first sign of illness, every few hours for the first few days, but no longer than a week. Indications include sore throat, fever, poor circulation, congestion, swollen glands, and repeated infections.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis): I really like Lemon Balm as a long-term remedy for immune system support - I take it regularly in tea form and bring it along with me in a more potent tincture form when I travel. Indications include brain fog, hypersensitivity, overextension of energy, and general stress.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa): I pack a small jar of haldi doodh or golden milk with me whenever I travel and drink it every morning. I love Turmeric's ability to enhance the immune system and nourish the body. Indications include aches and pains, general fatigue, and low mood.

Additional immune system herbs include: Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), Sacred Basil (Ocimum sanctum), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Elecampane (Inula helenium), and Lomatium (Lomatium dissectum). 

A Pain-Relieving Tonic

In addition to over-the-counter options, I like to carry an analgesic and anti-inflammatory herb that I can rely on should traveling and less than ideal sleeping arrangements lead to an increase in headaches and pain. 

Wood Betony (Betonica officinalis): One of my favorite herbs to alleviate headaches and, when taken early enough, reduce the severity of migraines. Indications include pain and nervous tension, headaches, anxiety, indigestion, blood sugar issues, cramps, and insomnia.

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus): If your pain improves with heat, such as warm compresses, a warming anti-inflammatory like Rosemary might be a good choice. Indications include indigestion, pain brought on by colds and fevers, and neuropathic pain.

Additional pain-relieving herbs include: Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), Lavender (Lavandula spp.), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), and White Willow Bark (Salix alba). 

A few considerations for my witch folk and magickal kin

Grimoires old and new are filled with charms for the traveller, from alleviating foot ache to protecting against the weather one was likely to find on the road. I find travel charms to act as a physical item to reassure and remind you to ground and center should things become stressful or when plans go awry, but to also connect with the magick of the journey.

A few magickal herbal charms include:

• A charm to protect your body from aches and weariness - Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is an old traveling charm for this very need.

• A protective herb for you and all of your luggage.

• A wayfinder charm to protect you from getting lost.

• Charms for your Ascendant can be a wonderful travel aid.

• A wonder finding herb to help you find magickal moments along your path - often, this is a beloved plant ally.

• Connecting with the energy of Sagittarius can help you feel freer in your journeys.

Putting Your Kit Together

In general, I reach for teas and powdered herbs before I reach for tinctures in my personal practice, but when it comes to traveling, tinctures or alcohol extracts are the most convenient and space effective. So in addition to my first aid salve, a few bags of cold care tea (as well as any daily tea I normally take), most of what is in my travel kit are 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce tincture bottle.

I have a variety of handmade zippered and tied pouches with elastic straps or small pockets for holding individual bottles in place, which are easy to make with simple sewing techniques. Use what you already have for your kit or you can purchase a handmade tincture pouch, wrap or sleeve insert from a small business. I’ve also known herbalists with crocheting or knitting skills to stitch up individual tincture holders that can be added to an existing toiletry kit (and it looks super cute). But it’s also just as effective to throw your jars and bags into an ancient ziploc bag if that means that’s the way you’re able to bring them with you - do what works!

Cozy Autumn, Festive Winter: Herbal Remedies for the Dark Season

The bright half of the year - from late spring to long summer - seems to move at a dizzying pace when compared to the dark half of the year - fleeting autumn to deep winter - which slows and steadies as light slumbers and the cold takes hold.

We need these bright times and these dark times with all of the mottled light and shadow that dances between. We need time to be speedy and swift just as much as we need time to be unhurried and languid. For me, the space between autumn and winter embodies the pause between the inbreath and outbreath more than any other time of year. Our experience of the pause between inhalation and exhalation, and the end of the old bright year and the birth of the new dark year, can teach us so much about our relationship with rest and being restful.

That place of pause holds a lot of uncertainty - What should I be doing? What should I be thinking? Will I breathe again? What's the point? - and who needs more uncertainty during these already uncertain times? And then, on top of all of the uncertainty, we are supposed to feel restful? There is too much work to do!

And yet, we must rest and learn to be uncomfortable for a moment to experience the length of deep rest. There is a magick in meandering, dreams that only come to us when we've fully relinquished the day, and visions of what might be that only appear after we've gotten a little lost. And then we turn the corner and find ourselves seeing something around and within ourselves for the first time. 

Herbalism, with its connection to time through the rhythms of the year, and the way that healing requires us to move backwards and forwards along our own timelines, is full of supportive herbs and plant allies that help us connect with this pause. While I can't point to a singular reason why working with plants strengthens our ability to engage with our healing pause, I've witnessed again and again, the ways that engaging with a form of healing deeply rooted in our collective ancestral experience gets us to slow down, to pause, and to reconnect. In this place of holy pause we can take a view of life and the ways we are living it not from a place of doing but of being. Plants, with their ability to move with time instead of struggling against it (as we are so prone to do as a species), can be wonderful guides back to this place of pause and steadiness. I find these pauses and ability to rest to make the festive moments of raucous cheer that much brighter and the more challenging periods of winter's dark that much shorter.

With practice, the pause helps us to move swiftly when needed, agilly adjusting to the challenges that come our way, while remaining rooted to our values of care and connection.

So as autumn transforms into winter, I've collected a few of my favorite recipes for this time of year to help us slow down, let go of the weight of what was, and let ourselves get lost in our own becoming.

Autumn to Winter Remedies

The following recipes are formulated as teas but can easily be made into herbal extracts, baths, or other forms of herbal remedies. I’ve crafted them with the transition from (roughly) Sagittarius to Capricorn season in the northern hemisphere and from (roughly) Gemini to Cancer season in the southern hemisphere in mind, but they can easily be adapted or used throughout the year.

For When You Need Help Letting Go

Autumn is precious and fleeting - it's a steep narrow path into the deep valley of winter and the more we try to carry what we no longer need with us, the harder the journey can be. The passage between autumn and winter can help us get clear on what helps to carry us along our path versus what weighs us down, along with everything in the muddled middle. One of the intangible aspects of working with plant allies is the way that, through alleviating discomfort and helping us feel better in our bodies, they can illuminate what it is we want, what we need, and what is ready to be let go. Some of my favorite path-illuminators and liberating herbs are Rose (Rosa spp.), which opens the heart to possibility, Peppermint (Mentha piperita), which brings us clarity, and Calendula (Calendula officinalis), which clears out shadows and lights the way ahead.

• 4 parts Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

• 1 part Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

• ¼ part Rose (Rosa spp.)

For When You Need To Wander

The ability to wander, meander, and unfollow, is as valuable as the ability to focus, pursue, and analyze. While it might feel counterintuitive to not try to figure out and name, with precision and finality, what it is we need to heal in our lives, the opportunity to get away from what we know and get a little lost what we don't know can serve us well in the long run. I find that the plant allies that help us wander are ones that are often recommended for dreamwork, such as Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), or ones associated with the Good Folk like Thyme (Thymus vulgaris). I also like to include Fennel (Foeniculum vulgaris), not only because it softens the bitterness of Mugwort's flavor, but it strengthens the compass of our intuition - a good thing to have while we wander. 

• 2 parts Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

• 1 part Fennel (Foeniculum vulgaris)

• ½ part Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

For When Your Immune System Needs a Boost

As the weather grows cooler and we spend more time indoors with others, our immune systems have to work extra hard to protect us against colds and flus. The work of building up our immunity takes place throughout the year, but we all need extra support with increased exposure to viruses. We can call upon a combination of immunostimulating and immunomodulating herbs to help us through the dark half of the year. Elder (Sambucus nigra) is my favorite immunomodulating herb that I start taking as soon as autumn arrives. I love Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) not just for its flavor but for its ability to warm us up and strengthen our immune system, while Sage (Salvia officinalis) protects against viral infections.

• 4 parts Elder (Sambucus nigra)

• 2 parts Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

• ½ part Sage (Salvia officinalis)

The Astroherbalism Apothecary: Crafting Herbal Charms for Your Moon Sign

One of the reasons I love astroherbalism is the way that it combines the practical with the profound where we seek to support the intangible (i.e. inner world experiences and emotions) through hands-on creativity (i.e. simple herbal charms aligned with our healing desires).

Following the first part of this series where we explored the energies of our Sun sign, I want to turn our attention to crafting charms and potions that support the energy of your Moon sign. While knowing your Sun sign used to be the extent of most people's knowledge of western astrology, more and more folks can easily name their Moon sign, too, and being a very pro-lunar sort of witch, I love this celestial culture shift.

As with my last post in the astroherbalism apothecary series, I'll be sharing some recipes with you, but what I really want to share with you is a framework for creating your own unique herbal charms for your Moon so that you feel inspired to use what is readily available to you.

To do that, we'll explore how our Moon sign shapes our energy and the common ways that our lunar energy can get disrupted. As an herbalist, I work with astrology as a story-telling-listening tool and a way to help folks get to know and name the healing needs of their body (and by "body" I mean physical form, emotional and mental experience, the psychic body, and so on). Within traditional western herbalism, our Moon represents our consciousness, the way we perceive experiences, our feeling body, and our most honest stories. Some of us, for example, process our feelings quickly, while others take a longer time to figure out what our feelings are. Our ability to digest and process our experiences, to form stories from them, and let ourselves feel our feelings profoundly shapes our understanding of wellbeing in our life.

Throughout our life we figure out what it is that makes us feel comfortable and at home within our world, allowing us space to process our lived experiences. It is our Moon sign which represents and helps to guide us on this journey of homecoming and exploration.

When it comes to supporting our Moon sign there are three primary paths that I focus on: recipes that help us integrate lunar energy, recipes that settle and center us, and recipes that help us strengthen our intuitive instincts. To help you identify what path may be most useful for you at this time in your life, I've created brief descriptions of each path as well as key phrases that you may or may not connect with. I encourage you to read these phrases out loud and if something resonates, to consider pursuing that path of magickal healing. Once you've identified what type of path will be most useful for you at this time, you can choose a few suggested herbs and then follow the guide below to creating your custom Moon sign charm. 

Crafting Your Lunar Charms

I’ve suggested a variety of herb types and plant allies to create your own Moon sign charms. The simplest approach would be to use whole dried herbs, combining them together to create an herbal charm bag or spell bottle. You can also build a Moon sign altar, adding your chosen plant allies to it. If you have the flower essence version of whatever plants you resonate with, you can easily craft your own flower essence potion. For those of you with herbal experience, you can choose herbs to make your own Moon charm tea, tincture or topical herbal oil, taking into consideration appropriate individual needs and contraindications.

Integrate Your Lunar Energy

Herbs and essences that help us integrate the emotional part of our experiences, reduce stress, and generally assist us in honoring our intersecting identities and stories in all of our wondrous wholeness.

Key phrases that indicate you might benefit from an integrative charm include:

• I feel like I'm a constantly changing up who I am depending on who I'm with.

• I feel uncomfortable in my own skin.

• I have a story to live, things to tell, but I'm afraid to do it.

• People wouldn't like me if they really knew who I was.

• Everything feels tangled up inside.

Herbs for an Integrating Moon Charm

I think of integration charms like meeting places at the crossroads - different path are converging to a singular point. When all these paths come together representing our various identities, responsibilities, and experiences, an integrative charm helps to bring all of these different parts of ourselves into a harmonious whole. Plant allies traditionally associated with the safe journeys like Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) work well with plants that represent and support the integration of wisdom like Sage (Salvia officinalis). In general, seeking out herbs that are associated with pathways and waysides, boldly scented plants, and herbs with bright colors are all good options.

Here are a few plant allies for a integrative Moon charm to consider:

• Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

• Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)

• Sage (Salvia officinalis)

• Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

• Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris)

• Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Stone allies can be a beautiful addition to an herbal charm if you already have them in your collection, including those that help us integrate disparate parts of ourselves such as Moonstone, Rose Quartz, and Sodalite. Choose your favorite colors that you feel represent who you are best for any candles, fabric, bottles or other items that you incorporate into your charm.

Center Your Lunar Energy

Herbs and essences that help us create a protective cocoon around our energy, find equilibrium after a period of stress or shock, and to deeply nourish our nervous system.

Key phrases that indicate you might benefit from a centering charm include:

• Everything and everyone is getting on my last nerve.

• I just seem to feel so much more than everyone else.

• I don't know what to do with all of my feelings.

• Life feels overwhelming.

• I struggle to connect with what I really want.

Herbs for a Centering Moon Charm

Focus on herbs that help to draw lunar energy towards you, drawing energy in and downwards, helping to root and ground our Moon selves. Roots can be very grounding and you can incorporate the roots of lunar plants into your charm such as the root of Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) or California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica). In general, herbs that are considered soothing, cooling, and calming are all good options, including herbs with cooling colors like blues, purples, silvers, and gentle greens.

Here are a few Moon centering herbs to consider:

• Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

• California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

• Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

• Rose (Rosa spp.)

• Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

• Lavender (Lavandula spp.)

• Milky Oat (Avena sativa)

If they are already in your collection, you might consider adding a stone ally to your charm, especially those that are grounding and centering including Black Kyanite, Obsidian, Smoky Quartz, and Bloodstone. Deep navy blues and forest green tones are also great for any candles, fabric, bottles or other items that you incorporate into your centering charm.

Strengthen Your Lunar Energy

Herbs and essences that not only increase the volume of our intuition so that we are able to hear it better, but our willpower and ability to follow through with our intuitive guidance.

Key phrases that indicate you might be in need of an intuition strengthening charm include:

• Something feels off about {situation or relationship} but I feel stuck.

• I know this feels wrong but I don't want to rock the boat.

• I don't know how I ended up in my current life.

• I don't feel like I fit into my life.

• Life seems to be passing me by, but I don't know what to do next.

Herbs for a Intuition Strengthening Moon Charm

When we're working from a place of strong lunar energy we are able to connect with and follow the guidance of our intuition. Intuition is often presented as a mystical gift reserved for a select psychic few, but in fact, it's a common skill of our species to quickly and unconsciously sort through past and present information and experiences to come to a place of instinctive reasoning about a situation. Our Moon represents that ability to perceive, filter, and organize our consciousness in a way that appears invisible to us - in other words, our intuitive abilities.

When we have been raised to distrust our intuition or have developed a pattern of ignoring our intuitive insights, it can take a lot out of us, increase our stress, and often leads us into patterns of living that feel out of sync with who we feel ourselves to be. A strengthening charm is going to be partially nourishing to our energy and partially energizing. We can incorporate herbs that are nourishing to our nervous system but also ones that feel magickal to us on a deeply felt level, as well as symbols, colors, and objects that pull at our sense of enchantment.

Here are a few Moon strengthening herbs to consider:

• Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

• Yarrow (Alchemilla millefolium)

• Elder (Sambucus nigra)

• Rose (Rosa spp.)

• Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

• Juniper (Juniperus spp.)

There are also a variety of stone allies you might consider working with to help strengthen your intuitive gifts and lunar energy such as Moonstone, Clear Quartz, Amethyst, and Labrodorite. You might also consider choosing purple and blue tones for any candles, fabric, bottles or other items that you incorporate into your charm.

Creating Your Moon Sign Charm

Decide on the form that your Moon charm will take (i.e. a spell bottle, a charm bag, a solar altar, flower essence potion, tea, etc.) and gather all of your ingredients and items. You should also have a bowl with water in it and a stone of your choosing as well as a candle and candle holder. Since water is the element of the Moon we’ll be integrating it as part of our charm.

If you are able to perform this charm on a night during a Moon phase that aligns with your needs (check out this series on rituals for the lunar phases for guidance), but if you're only able to perform this ritual during the day, no worries!

Ground and center (perhaps with a tree of life meditation) and settle into sacred space through your preferred method. Lay the items for your charm out before you, placing the stone in the bowl of water, and the candle positioned so that its flame will reflect in the water. 

Begin by holding your hands over the water and stone, charging up a space within and around you to assist your magick, saying:

Water holds
All land, all dreams
May I be held
Betwixt and between

Next, light the candle, whispering:

Dancing on the water
Light of the Moon
I whisper now
A healing rune
{strengthening, integrating, centering} charms
I gather round
By Moon and story
I am crowned

Visualize the light dancing on the water, the moon in the sky, and your own inner light illuminating the space within and around you, filling up the spaces within your lunar energy needs healing, and crowning you with your own lunar energy.

When ready, begin to craft your charm, naming aloud the purpose of each item that you are adding to it such as:

Mugwort for centering my dreams
Rose for strength and insight
Sage for intuition and wisdom

Once the charm has been made, pass the charm around the flame and over the water nine times, visualizing gathering up the Moon flame and energy of water into your charm. Anoint the charm and then your forehead with water in a crescent Moon shape, saying:

By plant, by flame,
by water, by stone
By lunar wisdom
I know to be my own
I am {strengthened, integrated, centered} by this spell
Nine times about
All is well!

You can now use your charm as you please, carrying it with you or placing it in an auspicious place in your home. The charm can be re-charged by putting it under moonlight and/or repeating the Moon charm ritual as needed.

Sweet Spring, Bright Summer: Herbal Remedies for the Waking Season

I was lucky during the formative years of my herbal education to have many of my teachers emphasize the importance of time when it came to plant medicine. While there are plenty of situations where herbs work speedily (alleviating a fever within a few hours, opening up the airways within minutes, and so on), much of the healing power of plants takes place over many months, if not longer. While I was taught to alleviate as much suffering as soon as possible by addressing symptoms, more importantly, I was to focus on the underlying issues that had brought about the state of disease, and inform those I was serving that part of the healing of herbalism is giving time for plants to do their work.

As an earth-centered herbalist and Pagan, one of the ways that I help those I serve understand the ways that plants work in our lives, is to point to the wheel of the year and the changing seasons. We do not suddenly leave spring and arrive in summer, but the land is always in a state of transition, moving from one season to the next. So it is within our bodies (and I use the term "bodies" to represent our physical, emotional, mental, and energetic selves), that we are always in a state of transition and movement. One of the hardest places to be on a healing journey is to feel stuck in one place getting nowhere - yet, even in these moments we are already in motion and entering into a new season of our lives. 

Centering our practices as herbalists and plant folk around the cycles of seasons helps to protect us against the false marketing of herbs as "miraculous cures" and the desire for instantaneous healing exacerbated by social media - an influence that can sway any of us, especially when we are desperate to feel better. While the slow and steady nature of healing plants can feel disheartening at first, when we approach healing as something which is transformative, it can be easier to perceive the summer heat we're craving even during the long drizzle of spring. A transformative and seasonal approach to healing doesn't promise specific results or miraculous cures, but helps us to find hope and expansive connection through knowing that we are always in a state of transformative change. 

So as spring transforms into summer, I've collected a few of my favorite recipes for the waking season to help us make a little room for and connect with the sometimes hard-to-detect, other times bright and shining, transformations occurring all around and within us.

For When You Need Help Slowing Down

On the land I live with, spring moves fast and then summer is suddenly here - the time between wearing sweaters to wearing sandals can be dizzying. But even if you live someplace where the time between spring and summer seems to draw on and on, there can exist a social pressure to be extra "productive" in spring in order to get "summer ready" (yikes, no). Summer, with its days of long light and increased heat, can be a beautiful time to slow down and plant allies like the nervous system trophorestorative Milky Oat (Avena sativa) help us to do just that. Together with Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), an herb that helps us to find and connect with our own inner rhythms, and Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), a plant ally that helps to slow down racing thoughts and soothe anxiety, the following blend helps us to pause, rest, and recenter ourselves as spring tumbles into summer.

• 3 parts Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

• 1 part Milky Oat (Avena sativa)

• ½ part Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

For When You Need to Cool Off

Late spring and early summer can bring with it weather that oscillates between sweater weather and hot snaps, so it's good to have a few cooling herbs to work with. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is one of my favorite hot season herbs, helping to calm, cool, and relax us. I love combining Hibiscus with Peppermint (Mentha piperita) which relaxes us when we need to calm down and energizes us when we need to wake up. The adaptogenic qualities of Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) are great any time of year, but during the summer the plant helps to protect the skin from the inside out from the season's increased heat as well as helping to balance our overall energy. The following drink can be served hot, but I especially like it iced and sweetened (maybe even made into a swamp tea). 

• 4 parts Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

• 1 part Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

• ¼ part Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)

For When Your Heart Needs Nourishing

The expansive energy of the land blossoming from spring into summer, stirs the energy of our own heart centers. Working with heart herbs like Hawthorn Berry (Crataegus monogyna), which acts as rejuvenative cardiovascular tonic, and the heart-opening Rose (Rosa spp.) help us to get in touch with our own power of possibility.
