Herbal Gifts : Beautiful Buzz Honey Scrub

After your luxurious Temple Bath Tea how about a honey scrub for your face and body? I think honey, especially local and raw stuff from folks who adore their bees, is an amazing and healing gift. Beautiful Buzz Honey Scrub

The Beautiful Buzz Honey Scrub has a lovely rose scent and a skin-rejuvenating quality, helping to gently cleanse the skin, reduce inflammation, as well as the appearance of fine lines. I use this scrub, too, for insect bites that are red and inflamed as the clay helps to draw out the venom and the Rose reduces inflammation irritation. The following recipe is a rough estimation of parts and you can make adjustments if you like a runny-er scrub or a more dense one. 

Mix the following ingredients together:

• 3 parts raw, local Honey
• 1/2 - 1 part Rhassoul clay or to desired consistency
• 1/4 part Rose (Rosa spp.) Powder
• 5 - 10 drops Rose Hip Oil per 1 ounce of scrub
• 5 drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil per 1 ounce of scrub

Store in a glass jar with a tight sealing lead. To use, scoop out a quarter-sized portion and apply to damp skin. Rub gently into the skin and let sit for a few minutes before washing off with warm water.

Herbal Gifts : Temple Bath Tea

Creating simple herbal gifts for friends and family is an easy and inexpensive way to spread cheer while practicing your remedy-making skills.

I think Bath Teas are a very accessible form of herbal healing: they are easy to use, don't require anyone to drink anything "too earthy" or "weird" (you know those folks in your life, bless them), and can even be used by those who don't have a bathtub (more on that below!).

Another great advantage of giving herbal gifts is using up herbs that need a home so that they don't fall into disuse in the back of your tea cupboard. Better to give that jar of Juniper Berries a home than watch them languish away - we better respect an herb's gift of healing when we actually use them. 

I created the Temple Bath Tea last year for my friends and family and I'm happy to share the recipe with you as the first in our #DIYHerbalGifts series. Temple is a skin-nourishing blend of herbs with a gentle forest scent mixed with epsom salts for additional calming and pain-relieving qualities. 

Temple Bath Tea

Begin by mixing together the following herbs. The recipe uses parts which means that you can make a batch as large or small as you like. A part, for example, might be 1 cup or 3 tablespoons depending on how much bath tea you want to make. So, if you choose 1 cup = 1 part as your measurement you would add 3 cups of Juniper Berries with 3 cups of Strawberry Leaf and 1 cup of Passionflower Leaf and so on.

• 3 parts Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)
• 3 parts Strawberry Leaf (Fragaria vesca)
• 3 parts Comfrey Leaf (Symphytum officinale)
• 1 part Passionflower Leaf (Passiflora incarnata)
• 1 part Blackberry Leaf (Rubus fruticosus)
• 1 part Cedar Leaf (Thuja plicata)

For every 1 part of your herbal blend add 1 to 2 parts of epsom salts. You then have two choices on how to proceed. You can either add about 1/2 to 1 cup of your bath blend to a large sealable tea bag (I like the large Press 'N Brew Tea Bags ones you can get from Mountain Rose Herbs) or a large reusable muslin tea bag. Your other option is to put the bath salts in a appropriately sized jar and let folks scoop out the amount they want when they want to use it. Either way, I do recommend letting your salt and herb mixture "brew" in a sealed jar for a few days to a week to help the scents and energies of the herbs blend together.

Finish up your gift by including instructions for use to help folks actually use their gift as well as an ingredient list so folks can be informed of what they are putting on their skin. How To Use Your Temple Bath Tea

• Option 1: Add 1/2 - 1 cup of bath tea to your bath either directly in a tea bag or loose. Remember that adding it loose to your bath requires cleaning up the herbs afterwards.
• Option 2: Brew your bath tea ahead of time! Add 1/2 - 1 cup of bath tea to a large bowl or jar and cover with hot water and let steep for at least 15 - 20 minutes. This is a great option for folks who want to use the bath tea as a wash if they don't have a bath or if you're using the bath tea loose leaf because you can strain the tea before adding it to your bath. This is my favorite way of preparing a bath tea.
• Option 3: Feeling super stressed by someone or something in particular? Take a handful of bath salts and throw it at them while yelling "NOPE!" to powerfully communicate that you are done with their nonsense.

The Sun in Scorpio

Ah, the realm of the Sun in Scorpio is a shadowy place of deep secrets and ancient mysteries - or so that is what many a taloned-tailed Scorpion would have you think. It is quite true that many Scorpio folk are drawn to the mysterious, the arcane, and the ancient. For some it is an aesthetic and for others it is a life calling. They are, in fact, drawn towards greater depths of intimacy than many of us dare tread, not only physical intimacy (though Scorpio is the guardian of reproductive organs, especially their external display and their connection to sexuality), but psychic and emotional intimacy. Scorpio folk seek subtlety and vulnerability, especially in their connection to power and potential. Depending on how they’re relationship skills are and where there level of compassion is, they can cause lots of conflict or incredible moments of ecstatic self-realization. 

Health-wise, Scorpio folk have a tendency to accumulate toxins. They are a fixed water sign (as opposed to the cardinal Cancer or the mutable Pisces) and their still waters can easily take on too much toxicity, whether it is physical toxicity from environmental poisoning or emotional toxicity from letting feelings simmer and brew instead of being released. Stagnation and lack of warmth are often found at the foundation of Scorpio health imbalances. Scorpio folk do already have an inherent detoxifying quality that is stronger in them than most other signs - they tend to push the toxins out of their bodies leading to possibilities of chronic acne, poor body odor, excess sweat, diarrhea, and/or irritability. It is, therefore, so important for Scorpio folk to come to the surface with scheduled regularity and gently detoxify so they don’t find themselves at a point when serious detoxification and intervention is needed having overworked their own inherent cleansing systems. While Scorpio folk tend towards chronic imbalances, they are extraordinarily sturdy and feisty fighters when it comes to regaining their health.

Scorpio folks can be tricky companions at times, but their friendship is well worth the effort, especially when clear boundaries of behavior are established. They teach us how to chase after the mysterious with ecstatic focus and to experience the mystical, rather than just reading about it. They can be persnickety and manipulative when out of balance and their ability to successfully but inappropriately control a situation stems from a twisted use of their gift of emotional intelligence (notice I wrote intelligence and not wisdom - that’s a mini Scorpio lesson for you). Yet, when they are in balance and behaving wisely Scorpio folk help to illuminate how our vulnerabilities make us that much more wise and how to use them as a compass for our own magickal adventures.

Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus)

Spiky and unexpectedly useful, Blessed Thistle is already distinguished as a Scorpio herb by the doctrine of signatures. Blessed Thistle has recorded use since ancient Greece and is a powerful bitter herb that awakens a damp and weak digestion (listen for sounds of gurgling as well as feelings of distention and flatulence). The herb is used as a treatment for malaria - malaria is caused by a parasite and parasitic diseases are fall under the sign of Scorpio. Blessed Thistle detoxifies drugs and alcohol from the body and has historic use by American Indians, such as the Quinault, as a contraceptive. The herb is an emmenagogue which also helps to bring on delayed menses and clears out excess phlegm and damp from the body, yet, it is not overly drying. In fact, Blessed Thistle, is far more regulating of bodily fluids and is a superb breastfeeding ally for supporting a healthy supply of milk.

The herb is also a nervine and can be used to relieve spastic pain and headaches, especially when brought on by nervous tension. The herb surrounds us in protective energy while helping us to clear out the muck, including brain fog, and reawaken our inner spark. Blessed Thistle can also help with the release of old emotions and it uplifts the spirits when taken over the long term (both useful and needed for Scorpio folk). The essence is particularly helpful in bringing wisdom from the ether into our physical reality. Topically, the herb can be used for boils, shingles, weepy eczema, and bleeding.

Scorpio Remedy Herbs

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

Parasitic diseases are often Scorpio imbalances and Wormwood is a powerful anti-parasitic herbal ally. It is a cleansing herb that should be used with respect and training. The herb is supremely bitter and excellent at expelling worms and parasites from the system. It is also a digestive herb when toxicity has built up in the gut and led to inflammatory diseases of the gut where infection is present. The herb can also be used when lack of appetite has become chronic, digestion is consistently poor, and there are signs of nervous exhaustion (which is why, in part, Wormwood has long been used in cases of anorexia). Wormwood clears persistent fevers, purifies the blood, and can help pull poisons from the body such as lead. The herb can also be used in the treatment of infertility, amenorrhoea, placental retention and after-birth pain. As a Scorpio herb, Wormwood is for when toxicity has built-up over a long period of time and it causing serious complications to a person’s health and wellbeing.

Wormwood also contains thujone which works as a brain stimulant but is also one of the reasons why the herb should be used by a trained herbalist and for a short amount of time in small doses since thujone can be toxic in large amounts. Externally, Wormwood can help treat fleas and lice as well as fungal skin conditions such as athlete’s foot. Use as a compress for bruises and joint pain.

Sun in Scorpio Flower Essence

Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

The flower essence of Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is one that I recommend particularly for those born under a Dark Moon in Scorpio which are folks who are typically deeply embedded in the part of Scorpionic nature that loves what is hidden and mysterious. Holly is, however, an equally important remedy for Scorpio Sun folk, helping them connect to others, warm up their sometimes cold and calculating persona, and help them develop a greater sense of compassion. The essence helps to release feelings of anger and envy towards others, especially when Scorpio folk feel they have been personally wronged and do not know how to move on or resolve the situation. Holly turns the heart towards love, especially when there is distrust, and I recommend that Scorpio folks not only use it internally, but as an external body wash and home spray to help soften their tough exterior. Holly softens the outer shell of Scorpio folk and helps to let the love in.

Hallowing: A Samhain Spread

The third and final harvest festival of the year, Samhain is the end of the bright half of the year – the roots to Beltane’s flowering branches. The part of our selves that has been slumbering since Beltane, awaken to the call of night, as we join the Spirits, Ancient Ones, Ancestors, Wild God/desses, and their horde as they clamber noisily throughout the land, welcoming in the new year. Our Samhain Tarot Spread glimpses forwards and backwards through the malleability of time and the veil which shapes and bends with greater ease during the Hallow's season. The spread is an attempt to connect us with our oracular inclinations, to notice the omens, and to become a better omen ourselves.

The spread also has a companion reversal spread to engage in a deeper working with your Ancestors for the coming year, explained below.

1. THE MOON. A source of guiding illumination for the death/birth of the year.  A look at the big picture influences in your life at the moment.

2. THE PATH. A glimpse into the very near future.  Pay attention to particular images, symbols, and signs on this card as they may very well be pathmarkings and roadsigns for your be looking out for.

3. THE LANTERN. The point that you use as your current primary guide.  What has captivated your attention and that you are drawn by?  Reversals of this card may speak to a guiding point that is either dim and hard to see or one that is particularly illusory and not of great benefit to the seeker.

4. THE MASK. What illusions are you maintaining for yourself or others?  These masks are not always meant to deceive, but often to protect, survive or adapt to the situation at hand.

5. THE BONES. A reflection of ancestry, family, culture, heritage, etc.  Pay attention to the relics that you keep as symbols of these various heritages.  What purpose do they serve?

6. THE BONFIRE. What needs to be cleansed and offered to the fire in order to move through to the new year?

7. THE VEIL.  What is being revealed?  The parting of the veil affects us in sometimes subtle, sometimes intense ways.  What is being revealed about your deep self that usually remains hidden (whether purposefully or unconsciously)?

8. THE ANCIENT ONES.  Guidance from Ancestors, Spirits, and/or Guides.

ANCESTOR COMPANION SPREAD

Flip the direction of the spread so that the point of the triangle points downwards or towards the reader.  Pulling new cards, the spread can be read for the coming year as guiding wisdom from your Ancestors for each season.

1. Samhain to Yule (Winter Solstice).

3. Imbolc to Spring Equinox.

4. Spring Equinox to Beltaine.

The following blog is a sneak peak from one of my latest Moonlight newsletters - enjoy!

It is one of my most favorite times of year, dear Lunas! It is nearing the season of Samhain in the Northern Hemisphere and in my own town we've finally had a slight break in the heat (I might even wear a sweater!). But as the Witch's New Year approaches I focus on living in a way that I want to live in the next year - a bit of manifestation magick! If I want my next year to be full of rest and time outside, for example, I might plan a camping trip or regular outdoor excursions during this time period for a bit of forest bathing. Generally, this is the time of year that I make sure to gather together with family and friends - especially those that live far away. It is a practice of how I want to live my life in the year to come (a mix of restorative retreats and joyful gatherings) and as well as working some manifesting or like-attracts-like magick.

A question that I ask my clients (and myself!) a lot when they come to me for a wellness consultation is not just "What feels out-of-balance right now?" but "What do you want to feel going forward?"

It can be very easy to focus on everything that feels out of sorts, wrong or just plain crappy (or maybe fancy crappy if it's been that sort of year). While I don't believe that having "negative" thoughts will only manifest negativity in your life (that can lead to blaming and shaming of victims of trauma and further traumatization), I do know that our emotions and thoughts have a physical impact on our wellbeing. If you're interested in the current scientific explorations about the connection between our emotional and physical wellbeing check out the fascinating field of psychoneuroimmunology. As herbalists we've known about these interconnections for quite some time because herbs work in an interconnected way in our bodies. It is no surprise, for example, that many herbs that relieve digestive complaints are also fantastic nervines as so often indigestion can result from stress or bring on stress (usually a combination of both). Recognizing the inherent interconnections between our body and our environment, we begin to return home to ourselves.

Much of the energy of Capricorn is about coming home, but coming home in unexpected ways.

So when I ask folks "What do you want to feel moving forward?" it is not uncommon for them not to have an answer or to find the question very challenging. Feeling well and whole is feeling at home, so when we lose that feeling of wellness and wholeness it can be very easy to lose sight of where home is and how to get back there. Often what has worked for us before either no longer works or we've forgotten what has felt like home to us before. When we ask, and more importantly answer, the question of what we want to feel we begin to reconnect to our inner compass that will help guide us back to ourselves. It can be really friggin' hard work, Lunas, but I know that many of you know that already. It is still work that needs to done and it is so rewarding in the long run.

What do you want to feel moving forward, Luna?

There is no one answer to this question and that is important to remember. I know that for some folks they want to feel "happy" whatever that might look for them, but I often find that first folks want to or need to feel really, truly, uninhibitedly sad or angry or wild first. Because it is acceptable to feel happy and to want to feel happy - but that is what is expected and we're dealing with the unexpected homecoming energies of Capricorn. Sometimes we need to feel angry and rage a bit in the process of coming home. Want it, Luna. Sometimes we need to grieve and let our heart break open. Call it to you, Luna. Be honest, be accountable, find what you want and to heck with the expectations of others and dominant cultural narratives that don't align with your values. Work your magick, Luna.

In the process, invite in green allies who help you connect with what you want by supporting strength and wholeness in all parts of your selves. It is not just Capricorn but all of the signs of earth that deal with concepts and experiences of home. I recently wrote about a Virgo herb, Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and the type of person that it best serves (Virgo is particularly good with coming home to community and healing spaces).

Fennel is not only excellent at offering aid to those folks who not only experience digestive complaints stemming from a dried-out digestive system, but also for folks who are stressed-out worriers who lack a sense of security in the world.

Fennel folk struggle to feel like they can move freely through their day and that there are too many restrictions placed on them (whether self-imposed, inflicted by relationships or a combination thereof). Fennel folks begin to forget things that they need to do, adding to their feeling of playing catch-up all the time. Fennel will help them to take stock of the stressors in their lives, release it, and digest their emotions instead of stuffing them down.
