Herbs for Highly Sensitive People: Daily Herbal Practices for Wellbeing

After a few years of working on and off with clients in-between teaching and running my small remedy shop, I started to notice a pattern with the types of folks who were drawn to my practice and the ones that I felt most capable of serving. A lot of them were herbalists or in similar fields. Most of them were activists and organizers. There were folks who were neither, many who were both, but all had similar issues with burnout, some variation of emotional fatigue, and generally what you end up with when you make sure everyone else at the table is fed but you don't always remember to feed or be fed yourself.

At first I thought that this was just how herbalists and activists are, but I've met enough of both to know that not all had a deeper sensitivity to life when compared to their peers like so many of my clients and students. It was a pattern I saw in myself but didn't have a name for until a few years ago when a wise therapist I was working with suggested I look up what  a "highly sensitive person" was.

I balked. I wasn't sensitive and especially not highly sensitive. I was a force to be reckoned with, indefatigable, and I had long disproven the critics of my childhood who called me "too sensitive" by pushing myself beyond my limits again and again. I thought the idea of a highly sensitive person sounded like pseudoscience and even if it wasn't I was trying to overcome or at least tame my sensitivity, not embrace it. But I also trusted my therapist, read some books, and was relieved to realize that what I read was surely what everyone experienced, right? Right?

Not really. Of course, everyone has moments of intense sensitivity but some folks live in a heightened state of sensitivity to their environment as their everyday baseline.¹ As I began to explore my own high sensitivity, I started to slowly realize that the pattern I was spotting among those I served and many of my students was high sensitivity. While it took a few more years to unlearn lessons of false dichotomies of sensitivity versus toughness and begin to embrace the way I feel my way through life, eventually I learned to love sensitivity as a gift. Sensitivity has served well as an herbalist drawn to working with sensitive folk as well as helping everyone I serve reconnect to the rich wisdom of their sensory worlds.

Being highly sensitive can be overwhelming when we live in a multitude of noisy worlds whether you live in a car-centric noisy city to all of our increasingly unavoidable digital spaces. There is a stigma with sensitivity within cultures that rely on productivity as a sign of strength and worth, as sensitivity points out ways that many of the systems we set up serve few of us well, and modern definitions of high sensitivity don’t always take into account the intersectionality of identity and experience when helping someone navigate sensitivity.²

Honoring and connecting with our sensitivity allows us to explore the experience of "something doesn't feel right" which can lead to all sorts of transformative rabble-rousing within our lives and communities. Sensitivity is an essential part of changing culture, but as individuals within those culture-changing communities, we need to find ways of supporting our sensitive needs.

Through the Herbs for Highly Sensitive People series we'll be exploring ways of creating these little zones of peace throughout our days, weeks, and months, making space for us to reconnect with our sensitivity in ways that feel empowering. Herbalism is a sensory rich healing tradition, full of sights, scents, tastes, and sensations, that draws us back into the collective wisdom pooled in our body and pulled up by our plant allies. Working with plants is one way that we, as sensitive folks, can honor the sensitive ways of our body by strengthening a resilience that reconnects while alleviating the symptoms of overstimulation. 

When I write of the body, I am referring to the body in its most expansive form including the physical, emotional, mental, and mythological body. I'm not trying to describe the emotional body as a separate part from the physical body, but rather that our bodies have emotional experiences intertwined with physical experiences intertwined with mental and mythological  experiences. Part of the practice of highly sensitive people is to explore through our bodies what we have been asked or forced to separate rather than create a healthy boundary. Being called "too sensitive" over and over again, for example, asks us to separate from our very real lived experience instead of creating healthy boundaries that help us feel less overwhelmed by our depth of feeling.

And for those who might balk at the term "highly sensitive" but find yourself reflected in a lot of the descriptions of high sensitivity - I feel that - and you might want to check out my first post in this series exploring some of the limitations of the "highly sensitive" moniker and how folks like Chris D. Hooten has proposed more culturally expansive and inclusive terms like highly responsive to your environment or HREs. I really like the term HRE and I highly encourage you to give Hooten's article a read. I'm all about expanding on language to invite more folks to the table.

I hope that these simple practices will fit in alongside any mental health services, community support groups, and the general network of good company in your friends and family. Plant medicine thrives as a stress-reducing, nervous system reparative, and preventative modality while helping us to return to a more earth-centered and affirming way of being in the world - a great path for any highly sensitive person to be on.

Drink Your Tea

The combination of hot water, healing plants, and a sturdy vessel to hold it in, makes herbal teas one of the loveliest healing practices to partake in daily. I love tea for its familiarity and ease of making as well as how it physically acts in the body - drinking warm water is one of the ways we can help calm our nervous system and adding in healing plants make the experience that much more useful. Teas are relatively inexpensive, easy to find pre-made, and if you grow your own little patch or windowsill of herbs, a great way to bring fresh herbs into your routine. Your daily tea can just be a tea that you love to drink and that feels good in your body and doesn't need to be specifically geared towards a healing need or full of nervines.

Making tea is also a simple way to participate in the process of creating remedies and being an empowered participant in answering your healing needs. Whether a pre-made blend, something you've put together or combining herbs each day as you need them, making tea helps us answer the question "What is it that my body needs?" with a practical curiosity. 

Practice Recommendations

Choose the same time each day to prepare and enjoy your herbal tea. A rhythm of calming practice is one of the ways that we invite our nervous system to settle. Of course, if it makes sense for you to have two or three tea-making times a day, go for it! A morning brew can help us create calm first thing in the morning, whereas tea at the end of the school or work day can help us ground and center after being out in the world (whether physically or mentally if you work or study from home), and evening tea helps prepare our body for rest.

Make your ability to access healing practices as easy as possible. For me, this means making a quart jar worth of herbal tea first thing in the morning that is ready for me whenever I need it for the rest of the day. You can also make a tea concentrate to keep in your fridge, adding it to hot water whenever you need it (a tea concentrate will keep for about 3 - 4 days in the fridge).

Needing extra emotional support or just want to add to the feeling of making magickal potions? Add a few drops of whatever flower essences (see below) you're working with. When you're dealing with overwhelm and dysregulation, trying to figure out what is happening, how to feel better, and the all the feelings that can accompany the process can feel serious, complicated, and daunting. Adding play and light-heartedness into our practices can not only help us experience moments of relief, but helps cultivate hope and the ability to spot pathways of possibility where they exist.

Tea Plant Allies for Highly Sensitive People

🌿 Milky Oat (Avena sativa): If I could only stock a handful of herbs in my apothecary, Milky Oat would be at the top of my list. Milky Oat is my favorite nervous system herb and as stress is an underlying factor for most of the illnesses and symptoms that I see in my practice, and gets in the way of folks being able to sit with and explore their experiences, it is a vital and beloved plant ally of mine. Milky Oat is a nervous system ​​trophorestorative making it an ideal plant ally to work with for most any nervous system needs.

🌿 Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis): An herb of joy, Lemon Balm is the ideal companion for those who are dealing with issues of energetic overextension. Indications for Lemon Balm include signs of brain fog connected to social burnout or bring on the precipice of social burnout (including social media driven fear of missing out), nervous anxiety and worry that results in insomnia and/or digestive issues (i.e. a nervous stomach).

🌿 Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): A gentle and calming nervine, a key indicator that Chamomile may be useful is digestive issues. A classic remedy for those sensitive folks with sensitive stomachs where they feel emotional upset in their gut.

🌿 Rose (Rosa damascena): Beautiful, amazing, unfolding Rose! Rose has gentle nervine qualities with the extra magick of thorn medicine. Rose is an ancient herbal ancestor and they’ve been a guide of healing wisdom through the ages - who better to turn to when life feels too big and overwhelming than to one who has seen it all and thrived? One of my favorite herbs for sensitive folks and empaths alike.

🌿 Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora): Skullcap is great for folks with lots of anxiety, especially when experiencing a lot of hurried and worried thoughts that leads to disrupted sleep. Indications for Skullcap include nervousness, fear of overwhelm, overwork, difficulty resting or focusing because of constant mental chatter, insomnia, and general hyperactivity.

Standard dosage for tea is 1 heaping teaspoon of dried herb per 1 cup of water, steeped for 15 to 20 minutes. If you’re looking for tea blend recommendations, my Bliss Blend recipe is one that I recommend often to highly sensitive folks. Play With Flower Essences

I love flower essences and their subtle healing ways. They seem to operate somewhere within the world of psychoneuroimmunology and are an interesting way of connecting to the emotional wisdom of the body to help with healing. They are very easy to make and I find them a wonderful way to get to know local flora through the essences that local practitioners will create (it is here that I encourage you to start up a flower essence exchange with your fellow plant folk friends).

There are plenty of ways to choose what flower essences to work with, but I like the traditional approach of reading statements of challenge (i.e. the difficult emotional state that you're currently in) and affirmation (i.e. the emotional state you want to be in) and observing the somatic responses of the body to those statements to discern the right flower essence. I have found again and again that highly sensitive folks thrive with this sort of feelings-based method of working with plants. And, sense flower essences are a form of vibrational remedy and contain no actual plant material within them, it's also a safe way to work with plants without having to know all of their physiological uses.

Practice Recommendations

While you can find my full guide to using flower essences over here, in general, you use flower essences by adding a few drops to your drinking water or tea each day. They can also be used directly under the tongue or massaged into the skin.

Flower essences are great to keep right by the door so that when you walk back in the house after being out and about you can take a few drops to help you settle back into your body. They can also be added to a spray bottle and used like an aura spray for the same results.

Flower Essences for Sensitive Folks

Below you'll find a list of some of my favorite flower essences with their corresponding emotional statements. I recommend reading them aloud and if you have a sensory response to one of them, you might consider working with it on a daily basis. 

🌿 Water Violet (Hottonia palustris)
Challenging Emotional State: I hide my sensitivity with extreme independence which creates a barrier between me and other people.
Affirmation: I use my sensitivity as a point of connection in my relationships.

🌿 Oak (Quecus robur)
Challenging Emotional State: I push myself even when exhausted.
Affirmation: I have healthy boundaries and know when to stop and rest.

🌿 Elm (Ulmus procera)
Challenging Emotional State: I consistently take on too much which leads to fatigue.
Affirmation: I know and respect my limits.

🌿 Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
Challenging Emotional State: Energy moves erratically throughout my body and I feel little control.
Affirmation: Energy moves through my body efficiently and effectively so I may use it wisely.

🌿 Larch (Larix decidua)
Challenging Emotional State: I lack confidence in my abilities.
Affirmation: I am confident in who I am and what I am capable of.

Nourish Your Nervous System with Tonics

A tonic is a type of herbal remedy that is restorative to our vitality and can be taken over an extended period of time to reestablish harmonious function in the body. Whether a tea, tincture or other form of remedy, having a rotation of nervous system tonics that you can take on a daily basis will help develop agility in your response to stimuli and ability to access healthy emotional responses while protecting against stress. 

While a daily tea practice is as much about the process and experience of drinking tea as it is about working with herbs, a nervous system tonic is a focused approach to specific healing needs. A nervous system tonic might be something you use throughout the day as acute needs arise and/or simply use alongside other practices like a daily tea. A tonic might also feature herbs that don't make it into your tea practice because of their taste but you can still bring them into your rotation in tonic form.

I like to have a few prepared blends or simple (i.e. single herb tinctures) on hand that I can choose from day-to-day based on my needs. Various nervines bolster the health of different body systems which means, for example, that we can work with a plant like Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) when we're looking for mental clarity in addition to nervous system support or California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) if we need help relaxing deeply for sleep. 

Practice Recommendations

I think nervous system tonics shine as tinctures and glycerites, where they can be easily carried in a bag or pocket as you go about your day. Of course, they are excellent in tea or capsule form - I always have a few pre-made nervous system tea blends made up and ready to go so that I don't have to spend too much time or energy preparing a mix when I'm feeling out-of-sorts.

Add keywords to your labels, whether you've purchased or made your nervous system tonics, so that you can easily figure out which remedy is for which need. Adding "sleep aid" to your tincture bottle of California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) or "brain fog buster" to your Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) capsule container goes a long way in helping you figure out what herb is the best for your current needs. Welcome in playfulness and pleasing aesthetics (you can put stickers on your containers, have fun!) to help make the process of working with herbs that much more enchanting.

Nervous System Plant Allies for High Sensitivity

All of the plant allies recommended in the tea section as well as:

🌿 Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica): The brain-shaped leaves of Gotu Kola speak to its affinity for mental health and brain vitality. As a brain tonic (i.e. nootropic) it supports general cerebral health as well as alleviating conditions such as brain fog and mental fatigue. Indications include mental fatigue that can occur alongside sensitivity, hyperactivity, mental and emotional exhaustion, and recovering from illness.

🌿 Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca): Motherwort is like a hug in a tea cup and is an herb that shifts energy for the better faster than most other herbs I have encountered. A great ally for times of intense change where you feel like you've lost your energetic balance. The herb works on the sympathetic nervous system, bringing calm and soothing energy. Indications include heart palpitations due to stress, indigestion, nervousness, insomnia, depression, restlessness, and general anxiety. 

🌿 Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus): If you're dealing with issues of fatigue, but find caffeine too stimulating, a gentle adaptogen like Eleuthero might be a good plant to consider. The herb helps to regulate the endocrine system, including the adrenals, which in turn reduces fatigue and helps to protect against the damaging effects of stress. Indications include brain fog, fatigue, and sensitive folks who are affected by environmental pollutants, social noise, and the stress of living in busy urban areas.  

🌿 Linden (Tilia x europaea): Linden is a wonderful plant to work with where excess states of tension has led to feeling stuck and low. A good plant ally when it feels like you're struggling to settle back into oneself. Indications for Linden include difficulty sleeping, signs of excess heat like irritability, impatience, high blood pressure, heart palpitations caused by stress, and a general state of agitation.

Vervain (Verbena spp.): Vervain is a great ally for those sensitive folks who struggle with excess tension and a feeling (whether literal or metaphorical) that they can't even turn their head for another perspective because they have so much to hold together to just get through the day. Indications include stiff neck and shoulders, tension headaches, low moods, and general irritability.

Thriving Everywhere: Self Heal Plant Profile

When I moved to Nisenan and Miwkoʔ Waaliʔ land / Sacramento, one of the first plants I noticed that was new to my eyes was this little purple flower that seemed to show up in everyone’s front lawn.¹ A careful look through plant identification books revealed to me that this was Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris), a plant I’d learned about in my studies as an herbal student, but not one that I’d ever seen in person before. It’s always exciting to meet a plant friend you’ve only read about and since then I’ve worked a lot with beloved Self Heal.

In the part of California that I’m in, Self Heal grows everywhere much like California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) or Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). It’s a common wayside herb and it’s healing gifts are tied up with the health of working people out in the fields, carpenters and farmers, laborers and Travelling folk. I find their energy to be steadying, their ability to inspire hope in the healing process enduring. Self Heal is a wonderful herb to work with and I hope that you’ll find the following plant profile of use to your own studies and practice.

Main Uses : Self Heal is one of my "how about a little" herbs, in that I'll come to the end of making a blend and I'll think "how about a little Self Heal" and add a pinch of it to the herbs already assembled. As Culpeper writes, "Here is another herb of Venus, Self-heal, whereby when you are hurt you may heal yourself: It is a special herb for inward and outward wounds.”²

One of the reasons that Self Heal is so useful and easy to add to many an herbal blend is that it addresses inflammation in the body in multiple ways. Reducing inflammation can be a key component to alleviating many diseases and imbalances making Self Heal so versatile. Self Heal clears heat from the body by improving the efficiency of the liver and kidneys, as well as by acting as a blood tonic. As a lymphatic tonic, Self Heal addresses stagnation and the issues that can arise from it such as congested and swollen glands, which can lead to infections. Finally, Self Heal addresses inflammation as an immunomodulator, appropriately enhancing the body's immune response and helping to moderate an over-responsive immune response. 

Many of the key indications for Self Heal are related to excess heat and especially excess stagnant heat which results in swelling and engorgement. Conditions like mastitis can often be helped using Self Heal both internally and externally (alongside other mastitis herbs like Phytolacca americana), as well as alleviating the pain of fibrocystic breast tissue, sore nipples, and general swelling. Other indications for Self Heal include pain caused by tension including tension headaches, neck, shoulder, and back pain, as well as dizziness and vertigo caused by hypertension. The herb can be useful in autoimmune conditions "as manifested by joint pains, low-grade fever, fatigue."³ As an anti-inflammatory, cooling tonic, Self Heal is also a good herb to turn to in case of fever (combine with Eupatorium perfoliatum to help with painful fevers). The herb is useful in damp lung conditions including wet coughs and congestion as well as more serious conditions like tuberculosis. Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, Self Heal continues to be used in treating tumors both malignant and benign and there has been research showing that Self Heal might be useful in the treatments of some cancers. In general, it is a good ally for processes of detoxification.

Self Heal has long been used as an herb for all complaints of the mouth and throat including sore throats, tonsillitis, laryngitis, mouth ulcers, bleeding gums, and gum disease in general. Use as a gargle and as a tea, but it can also be applied externally as a compress to the neck. In fact, the Latin binomial for Self Heal, Prunella, "was originally Brunella or Brunellen, a name given to it by the Germans as it was used to treat die Breuen, an inflammatory mouth and throat problem, common to soldiers in garrisons."⁴ As I mentioned earlier, many herbalists like myself reach for Self Heal to help harmonize and enhance an herbal blend, but also help to tend to the emotional wounds that can appear alongside physical ones. Herbalist Deb Soule writes:

“For years I had felt that a plant with the name self-heal must have the gift of healing internal wounds that cause feelings of sadness, grief, despair, anger and hopelessness. I began adding small amounts of the tincture of self-heal along with other herbs to enhance the healing properties of a formula. Sometimes I add a few dried flowers of self-heal to a tea mixture to help facilitate a deeper, more inward healing process.”⁵

Self Heal was one of the first flower essences I worked with and it was introduced to me as the type of essence that most anyone would benefit from working with. Self Heal helps us to connect with the belief that healing is even a possibility. I like making an herbal massage oil with both the herb and essence of Self Heal, using it for general body care, reducing lymphatic swelling, and supporting the emotional body through the physical one.

Topically, Self Heal continues to act as a useful anti-inflammatory that draws out heat from wounds and injuries alongside its antiseptic qualities. Many of Self Heal's common names like "carpenter's herb" and "sickle wort" refer to its use by laborers working with sharp tools who were able to harvest this freely growing herb easily. Use the herb as a wash for wound care, liniment, and/or salve for bruises, sprains, strains, boils, and burns. Also a good choice for bug bites and stings (great to use alongside Plantago spp. if you happen to get stung by a bee or other insect when out and about). Used internally and externally, Self Heal is a good ally for hemorrhoids, piles, and ulcers, as well as acne, rashes, and other skin irritations. Use as a compress for back pain, muscle and joint pain, as well as headaches. For those prone to tension headaches, consider combining with Blue Vervain (Verbena officinalis) and/or Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). Self Heal is also useful as an eyewash for cases of conjunctivitis.

Finally, I want to share a description from Anishinaabe mashkikiiwikwewag, Keewaydinoquay, about Self Heal that so succinctly sums up the beauty of Self Heal's (ingijibinaa) healing gifts:

“If it has a nice place to grow in, a moist and sunny or semishaded place, this plant can grow to be eighteen inches tall, but if it is growing on a suburban lawn that is dry and regularly mowed, it can be two inches tall. In either extreme it will endeavor to put out its little flower and live a full life. As Kee used to say, ‘If a little weed can do that, so can people.’”⁶

Magickal Uses : A great herb to add to any healing bundles, spells, rituals, and charms. Helps to give courage to those seeking healing, especially those folks who have been worn down and feel hopeless about their ability to feel well again. Dr. JJ Pursell shares in her annotated guide to Culpeper's Complete Herbal that she was "taught to use self-heal topically whenever I was bitten in a dream because the energetic bite must be treated." I love this bit of herbal tradition of tending to wounds sustained in dreams in the waking world. While Self Heal was not recommended to me specifically, I received similar instructions on working with plants and dreams, and find that it's such a lovely way of helping the body settle after a particularly intense dream or nightmare. It is a very sweet form of somatic magick and calling the spirit home to the body.

The Self-Heal Personality : There are two key Self Heal personalities that I've most often come across. The first is the person who on the surface appears to have given up any responsibility for their own healing. They strongly cling to the belief that it is only something or someone outside of themselves that will make them well and that their ability to feel well is not something they have any control over. Sometimes this ties into patterns of addiction to substances, people, and experiences as a way to cope. Deeper beneath this is a belief that not only is feeling well not something they can access through their own effort (alongside appropriate therapeutic, community, and medicinal support), but that they do not deserve to be well. This wound is a deep one and often stems from early childhood experiences, but not exclusively. Self Heal can help them to realize that to feel well and supported in their wellness is a human right and to begin to question their own beliefs around their deservedness. Ultimately, Self Heal helps the to feel a sense of empowerment in being responsible for seeking, cultivating, and receiving what they need to feel well.

The second Self Heal personality I've come across is a person who has done a good amount of inner work, they have a rather secure belief in their ability to seek out and know feelings of wellness, and then something bubbles to the surface that they were not expecting. It may be a familiar pattern that they had thought they had already addressed but are now seeing from a different angle or an issue that they had not faced before because it needed to be uncovered by the healing work they've already done. Self Heal acts as an ally and guide in this process of understanding oneself and one's responsibilities even in areas of life where they believe they've already addressed it all. Instead of shame or humiliation or a feeling that they should've "healed better" before, Self Heal helps them feel humbled by the magick that is healing and responsibly empowered wherever this part of their healing journey is guiding them.

Drug interactions :  Avoid with insulin and hypoglycemic medications. Because of its liver stimulating qualities, it may reduce absorption of prescription drugs and supplements.

Liberatory Rest: California Poppy Plant Profile

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a beautiful flower growing in the hot and dry areas of the Golden State, covering hillsides in their orangey-yellow glow. An ally of the restless and a provider of deep sleep, I’ve come to know them best living up in the northern part of California where they freely grow on hillsides, front yards, and sidewalk cracks.

In many ways, California Poppy reminds me of Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis) which shows up in unexpected places, often in very low quality soil, and thrives. While Dandelion is known for its gifts as a digestive bitter, California Poppy works in many ways as a sleep bitter, helping us to process the stress of the day, release it, and move on into a state of rest and relaxation.

Main Uses : A beautiful wildflower that covers hillsides throughout the Golden State, California Poppy has long use as an herb of relaxation, nervous system restoration, and sleep for both adults and children. If you're looking for an herb to help reset disruptive sleep patterns but have found other herbs like Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) or Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) leaving you too drowsy, California Poppy might be a good ally to work with. I find it to be less sedating but just as relaxing as the other two herbs mentioned which can be useful for folks who are more sensitive to the effects of herbal medicine.

The plant can be used internally as a tea or tincture, but it also makes a lovely compress when it comes to supporting sleep. After taking the tincture, use an herbal compress (with a few drops of tincture added to it if you like) along the spine before bed to help calm the nervous system and bring on sleep (make it extra special by listening to calming music, combining with breathwork, and/or being read to). Of course, if you're struggling with a chronic pattern of disruptive sleep it's important to reach out beyond herbal medicine and seek additional modalities like therapy and/or bodywork to help you invite healthy sleep patterns back into your life again.

One of the ways that California Poppy helps us to get a good night's sleep is that it helps to bring energy down from the head to our roots, calm racing thoughts, and reduce pain that can come with restlessness. California Poppy is a nervous system restorative and when combined with other herbs like Milky Oat (Avena sativa) it can be used in low doses on a daily basis to help recover from burnout or a period of intense stress. Consider combining with herbs like Vervain (Verbena officinalis, hastata) if there is excess tension and a tendency to overwork or Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) if there is excess anxiety and racing thoughts. Combine with Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) if heart palpitations are also present. Can be used in small doses for children who struggle with hyperactivity and restlessness, especially at bedtime.

The flower helps to reduce pain not only as a nervous system restorative but as a cooling anti-inflammatory. Useful in cases of arthritis, shingles, hypertension, menstrual cramps, tension headaches, and toothache. Use internally as well as externally as a compress or in baths. Traditionally used by the ʔívil̃uqaletem in small doses for cases of colic in infants.

With children, California Poppy can be useful for restlessness and insomnia as well as bedwetting or enuresis. One of the indications for California Poppy for enuresis in children is "nervousness" but I think a more modern term would be dysregulation - there is a restless and dysregulated nervous system which can lead to poor sleep, bedwetting, and so on. California Poppy can be useful in the treatment of ADHD in the young but I highly recommend working with a skilled practitioner to help you formulate the right blend as sedating herbs like California Poppy can sometimes feel more disrupting than useful.

Topically, the herb can be used for inflamed conditions of the skin from acne to eczema. Use as a wash or in herbal baths or steams. The flowers can be made into an herbal oil and used in the scalp to calm irritated skin and help promote hair growth especially when stress is causing hair loss. Combine the tincture with St. Joan's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) herbal oil for a topical treatment for nerve pain.

Magickal Uses : Use California Poppy to help you achieve a magickal flow state for ritual, divination, and more. Especially useful when combined with Rose (Rosa spp.). Use in charms for bringing good dreams, psychic vision, and in trancework. A good addition to Moon spells of all kinds.

The California Poppy Personality : One of the ways of understanding the California Poppy personality is to compare it to Vervain (Verbena officinalis) folk. There is a tension present in both types of folk leading to a rigidness of opinion and belief. With Vervain folk this rigidness can be tied to more acceptable forms of tension (i.e. workaholism) whereas with California Poppy folks the tension is more often about the restrictiveness of the radical. They often start of as restless spiritual seekers, perhaps suffering from the insomnia of the soul, but find themselves becoming rigid in their spiritual seeking, often attaching to one form of practice, devotion, teacher, and/or school of thought which requires extremes in behavior. Their seeking is externalized (i.e. the wisdom I seek is out there in someone or something other than me) and working with California Poppy can help them to relax into their own internal wisdom, reconnect with their intuition, and rest deeply in the process. Herbalist Anne McIntyre describes California Poppy's effect as helping folks to "develop a more solid inner life" and I've found this to be true.

One of the costs of extreme devotion to outside forces is disconnecting from one's gut feeling of when boundaries are being violated or beliefs have become nonsensical to the point of harm. California Poppy acts as a restorative to the spiritual nervous system, calling home the intuition, releasing folks from the ceaseless wakefulness harmful belief systems (and the media systems that keep us hyperconnected) to come home to a restful ease of the soul at home with itself.

Contraindications : Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Contraindicated in glaucoma.

Drug interactions : Do not take if on MAOIs.

Dosage : Standard dosage.

Of Holiness + Intensity: Vervain Plant Profile

So here I am sitting with my planner and trying to figure out what it is that I’m going to write about about over the next few months. Things we might-do for the Sabbats? Check. Something about how Mercury is not out to get us? Sounds good. A profile on Vervain (Verbena officinalis)? No, I’ve already written that. Right? Surely I’ve written about Vervain!

Turns out, that no, I have not written about an herb that I spend a lot of time recommending to folks.

I think what happened is that I’ve mentioned Vervain in a number of other posts that led to the development of a Vervain-less void when it comes to an in-depth engagement with this most lovely of plants. So I’ve made up for that with the following deep dive into the world of tension alleviating, self-relating, holy altar blessing Vervain.

Tradition dictates that Vervain should be gathered before dawn during the dog days of summer - roughly July 3 to August 11 - when the star Sirius would be brightest in the eastern sky. Main Uses : In traditional western herbalism, Vervain is an herb with ancient use, considered like Sage (Salvia spp.) to be a panacea for all ills. One of the earliest recorded uses for the herb was as a remedy for swelling and inflammation related to a number of diseases from poisonous bites to ulcers and swelling in the mouth and throat. The Welsh Myddfai physicians recommended Vervain for the treatment of swollen glands and Hildegard recommended Vervain for ulcers and swelling, including swollen and sore throats. She specifically recommended topical use of the herb in the form of poultices wrapped around the neck. Sore throats accompanied by shoulder and neck tension as well as a headache can be indicators to use Vervain alongside other throat soothing herbs like Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Mullein (Verbascum thapsus).

The healing gift of Vervain to reduce swelling and inflammation - which are sometimes derived from states of excess Heat/Excitation - speak to the plant’s cooling abilities. When describing tissue states in traditional western herbalism, Heat doesn’t necessarily mean that something is hot in the temperature sense which is why Excitation is also used to describe the state. One of the indications for Vervain is someone who is often in a state of excitation and movement - these are folks who tend to overwork, rarely sit still, and are driven by an inner intensity. A certain level of tension is required to maintain this level of intensity and drive and instead of stepping back and relaxing after a strenuous push (whether after a work or school project, an athletic pursuit or any other type of project), they maintain a state of tension which can lead to health imbalances. One of the most common signs of this prolonged state of tension is the tension headache and Vervain can be a great remedy.

The ways that I most use Vervain in my practice and life is as a remedy for excess tension with the tension headache, shoulder and neck pain, and type A personality as key indicators. In general, Vervain can be helpful in cases of insomnia, stress, and agitated nervousness. Signs of irritability, oversensitivity, depression can all indicate that Vervain can be a useful ally. It can be a great herb for children who are finicky, irritable, and have trouble sitting still (sitting still in the context of needing to rest and relax, not the inappropriate expectation of sitting still for hours on end in educational settings). Vervain is a lovely and powerful nervine that pairs well with a number of other herbs - I don’t tend to use it solely on its own because I think that one of the lessons of Vervain is learning how to work with others and ask for help. With tension headaches with a lot of mental chatter, I like to combine Vervain with Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). For recovery after a period of prolonged tension and/or illness including chronic fatigue and postpartum depression (Bartram recommends combining with Matricaria chamomilla), I use Milky Oat (Avena sativa) with Vervain. Where there is lack of pleasure because tension gets in the way, I like to use Vervain with Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) and Rose (Rosa spp.). 

One of the lessons I have learned working with Vervain is that if it is an herb that is useful for folks when it comes to excess tension in their lives, it is often an herb that indicates that a greater life change is required. As a holy herb, Vervain was and is used in rites of cleansing the temple space and as an offering, and I see it acting in people’s lives in much the same way. Something must change (and often it is patterns of overwork) in order for equilibrium to be re-membered. I recommend incorporating Vervain in both its fast and slow methods of preparations - a tincture can be very helpful for relieving acute pain, but also consider using the herb as a poultice or in a bath to invite yourself to slow down. For some folks that Vervain is useful for the idea of slowing down can evoke a lot of fear from within them - consider using the flower essence alongside the herb for extra emotional support.

The herb is useful as a digestive tonic helping to relax the digestive process if it is overly tight and tense and not allowing for the proper assimilation of nutrients. Other indications include stomach aches caused by stress. A traditional use for the herb was for expelling stones from the kidney and bladder. It is also clearing and nourishing for the liver. Another way that Vervain brings balance to the body is by acting on the thyroid gland, normalizing the amount of TSH released by the pituitary gland. Use the hot tea at the start of colds to sweat out toxins. Vervain helps to bring on menses and as a menopausal herb it brings it’s cooling qualities to hot flashes. There is also a long history of use of Vervain for convulsions, spasms, and seizures, especially when connected to menstruation. Use as a galactagogue to help bring milk postpartum (avoid if struggling with engorgement).

Vervain has a long history of being used externally as a poultice for reducing swelling, alleviating pain, and helping to open the lungs. Use for other topical complaints such as bruises, hemorrhoids, and eczema. For mouth complaints such as canker sores, sore throat, gum disease and cavities, use as a gargle. 

Magickal Uses : The magickal uses of Vervain is vast because it was (and is) seen as a deeply sacred herb. In ancient Rome, priests of Jupiter as the patron of good faith who were responsible for advising the senate on issues of war and peace as well as declaring both, would wear crowns of Vervain. Their envoys and messengers on matters of war and peace were called verbenarii, carrying sprigs of vervain to negotiate peace. Vervain was used similarly in this way in ancient Persia and by Germanic peoples. Vervain can be used today for diplomats and mediators, social workers and activists trying to negotiate peace and a kinder world.

The altar of Zeus was said to be cleaned by the herb. Within Egyptian myth, the plant was said to have sprung up from the tears of Isis when she wept over the loss of her lover Osiris. The presence of the herb at times of loss and grief shows up again in Christian mythos as an herb used to clean the wounds of Christ after he hung on the cross. The Druids honor Vervain as one of their most sacred herbs, using it to bless sacred space, in rituals of speaking prophecies, in anointing oils, and as an herb of offering. Throughout Europe, it was seen as auspicious to gather Vervain around Midsummer, sometimes specifically on St. John’s day on June 24. Pliny gave specific directions for the gathering of Vervain as dictated by the Magi:

 “... [The Magi] required vervain to be gathered at the rising of the constellation of Sirius the Dog Star, when neither Sun nor Moon was shining. A circle had first to be drawn around the plant with iron, and after gathering, some wax and honey was given back to the Earth in its place.” (1)

However you choose to harvest Vervain, as with all of our plant relations, it should be done in a sacred manner. As an herb of Venus, Vervain can be used in love spells of all varieties. It’s legacy as a Venusian herb lived on in the Victorian language of flowers as it meant “you tempt me.” In addition to love magick, Vervain can be used in protection spells and healing spells of all varieties. Use the herb for fertility of both people and fields - especially when used around the Summer Solstice. Use to help with psychic development.

The Vervain Personality : One of the most common ways a Vervain person will be described is having a “Type A” personality - intense, particular, usually very stressed, and prone to states of tension and excitation. Often they place their sense of self-worth outside of themselves. Usually this is found in their work but it can apply to all aspects of life whether child-rearing, homemaking or competitions of any kind. While Vervain folks do not lack motivation, they often lack the ability to slow down and take a break. When suggestions are made for them to slow down it would not be out of character for them to scoff at the idea and even believe that other folks just “don’t get it” - that they have to work this hard and there is no other choice. While Elm (Ulmus procera) is the essence of folks who place their worth within their work, Vervain does this to a degree but often their work is more about creating a sense of order and rightness in their lives. It has to be this way, otherwise what sort of chaos will ensue? The attempt at control can also be an attempt to make up for a lack of self-esteem, but can come off as taking up too much space in their relationships with others. Though is can be difficult to see from the outside, Vervain folks hold a lot of fear within them. One of the ways that Vervain helps us is to bring us back to what is sacred in our lives. It’s less about taking away fear as it is about bringing us home to something bigger than our fear - our hope. It can be helpful to remind Vervain folks that they will feel tired for a little while after taking a break from their break-neck speeds, but that their energy and vitality will return renewed.

Drug interactions : Do not take at the same time with mineral supplements. Avoid with anticoagulants and warfarin.
