The Sun in Sagittarius

There they go! Sagittarius folks are excellent adventurers chasing the fading light at the far end of the horizon. They are highly individualistic taking pride in their understanding of just how unique they are. Since Sagittarian folks can value liberty and personal freedom above all else if they begin to feel even the slightest bit boxed-in or restricted they can become spooked, angered, or some combination thereof, and run off. They can be some of the most socially-oriented of the signs (competing with Gemini) and have a friendly and inquisitive nature which helps them grow a wide and varied social circle. Their fiery mutability can lead them to being very good at burning up the opposition in any argument or discussion which, combined with their hot-headed pride, can sometimes make them difficult to folks to collaborate with. On the flip-side their big vision helps expand what is possible with any project. Learning tolerance and acceptance for the value of different opinions and different standards of living (especially standards of living that they consider narrow-minded) can go a long way in helping Sagittarius folks to recognize that we’re all unique and that doesn’t make their uniqueness any less special.

In regards to health, Sagittarius folks often experience imbalances arises from excess heat. They are a mutable fire sign so when heat gets trapped in their bodies, whether from injury, over-exertion that leads to weakness, and/or unexpressed emotional turmoil, their systems can become dried out and irritated. Sagittarius is also the sign of accidents, especially athletic ones (and traditional texts mention falls from horses specifically), so taking seriously proper training and recovery practices goes a long way to help protect the mighty Centaur. It is important for Sagittarius folk to seek out regular restorative and centering activities that cool an overstimulating body, mind, and spirit. Hydration is a key to any sign’s health, but fire signs like Sagittarius tend towards being dehydrated more than others. Not only water, but healthy oils and fats will help keep everything running smoothly for our Centaur in addition to mellowing out the sugar imbalances this sweet-tooth inclined sign can often experience. Known for their optimism, a sure sign of a out-of-balance Sagittarius folk is that their optimism has been replaced with a angry chronic pessimism that leaves them closing their eyes to their beloved horizon and raging both internally and externally.

Hanging out with Sagittarius folk can be an adventure in-and-of itself and its well worth the effort! They spark and dance and reach for new ideas and have a whole lot of fun along the way. Details may not be the strong suit of Sagittarius folk, but it is part of the reason they carry the free spirit that they do. Being mindful that others pointing out the importance of the little details can be a very good and helpful thing and is not always a criticism, Sagittarius folk will become even wiser. Their “this is who I am, take it or leave it” attitude can be extraordinarily refreshing. It can also lead to a lot of moments of “foot-in-mouth,” but this can also be tempered with some maturity and self-awareness. Once Sagittarius folks realize that humility goes a long way when it comes to getting folks to listen to what you have to say, they become even more powerful in their ability to inspire creativity and optimism in those around them.

Sagittarius Guardian Herbs

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) by Robert Engelhardt

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) by Robert Engelhardt

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Nicholas Culpeper writes in his Herbal that Dandelion “is under the dominion of Jupiter. It is of an opening and cleansing quality, and therefore very effectual for the obstructions of the liver, gall and spleen, and the diseases that arise from them, as the jaundice, and hypochondriac.” The whole plant can be used in healing and its primary skill lies in its ability to help vitality move freely through the body. One of the primary ways that Dandelion accomplishes this is by clearing the blood of toxins and waste material through strengthening the liver. Dandelion has a tonic effect on the blood, lymph system, and liver, helping to detoxify all three and improve the eliminatory qualities of the liver and gallbladder. Part of it’s blood purifying qualities comes from its high nutritive salt contents which cleans the blood and clears excess acid. The herb stimulates the production of bile in the gallbladder (by causing it to contract) triggering the liver to do the same. Dandelion is especially useful for clearing an overburdened liver of excess hormones. Increasing bile and strengthening the digestive tract, Dandelion helps us to absorb nutrients from what we ingest and then move those nutrients throughout our body.

Additionally, Dandelion cools overheated PMS symptoms, menstrual cramping, and painful menopause, especially when water retention, pelvic congestion, and feelings of extreme frustration are present. Really, Dandelion is good for chronic inflammation of all sorts. Another indication that the movement of Dandelion is needed is that being still, lying down, and resting can worsen conditions, but healing touch, such as massage, brings relief. Use the sap topically for warts, calluses, corns, and general rough skin. The leaf and flower can be used as a wash for skin irritation. The infused oil of the flowers can be used for stiff muscles and muscle pain as well as relieve the discomfort of arthritis.

Sagittarius Remedy Herbs

Burdock (Arctium lappa) by Christian Fischer

Burdock (Arctium lappa) by Christian Fischer

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

During the turn of the 19th century, detoxifying Burdock was used a remedy for folks coping with the excess pollution of the Industrial Age. The hard-working herb is well-deserved of its reputation for helping eliminating waste and polluting contents from the body. The plant is wonderfully cooling and moistening which, along with its anti-inflammatory prowess, acts as a wonderful remedy to worn-out and overheated Sagittarian folk. Look for signs of dry and scaly skin, dry-out digestion and stools, and a short temper. Burdock is useful in cooling hot-blooded conditions and helping the body to deliver and use fats and oils wisely. Sagittarian folk have a tendency towards a sweet-tooth (over-stimulating food can be just as much fun as over-stimulating adventure) and Burdock can assist with sugar imbalances and lessening sugar cravings.

Burdock moistens from the inside out, but can also be used topically as a wash or in compresses to reduce swellings, bruises, sprains, and strains. The herb is excellent for restoring the body to a state of balance through its detoxifying and oil-directing qualities that it can be an excellent choice for recovering after a period of over-exertion, illness or injury.

The strong-willed and adaptable Sagittarius folk can be very difficult to deal with once they have made their mind up that they are right. They are incredible committed to their beliefs and strong-willed in their presentation of them. Sagittarius folk can come off as over-bearing and dogmatic, but there is also something quite incredible about Sagittarius folk when they shift just a little. When they are committed, without persuasion to tolerance, compassion, complexity, and non-judgement they are superb souls who model the power of the will. To help Sagittarius folk develop a pattern of non-dogmatic behavior, Vine (Vitis vinifera) Flower Essence offers its services. Vine is a Flower Essence for over-bearing personalities that can have little regard for others and their feelings as long as they feel they are in the right and doing what they want to be doing. Vine helps Sagittarius folk soften up, respect boundaries, and learn to be in power-with others not power-over them. Becoming more flexible and compassionate, Vine assists Sagittarius folk lose the attitude of greatness and instead just be great.

The Sun in Scorpio

Ah, the realm of the Sun in Scorpio is a shadowy place of deep secrets and ancient mysteries - or so that is what many a taloned-tailed Scorpion would have you think. It is quite true that many Scorpio folk are drawn to the mysterious, the arcane, and the ancient. For some it is an aesthetic and for others it is a life calling. They are, in fact, drawn towards greater depths of intimacy than many of us dare tread, not only physical intimacy (though Scorpio is the guardian of reproductive organs, especially their external display and their connection to sexuality), but psychic and emotional intimacy. Scorpio folk seek subtlety and vulnerability, especially in their connection to power and potential. Depending on how they’re relationship skills are and where there level of compassion is, they can cause lots of conflict or incredible moments of ecstatic self-realization.

Health-wise, Scorpio folk have a tendency to accumulate toxins. They are a fixed water sign (as opposed to the cardinal Cancer or the mutable Pisces) and their still waters can easily take on too much toxicity, whether it is physical toxicity from environmental poisoning or emotional toxicity from letting feelings simmer and brew instead of being released. Stagnation and lack of warmth are often found at the foundation of Scorpio health imbalances. Scorpio folk do already have an inherent detoxifying quality that is stronger in them than most other signs - they tend to push the toxins out of their bodies leading to possibilities of chronic acne, poor body odor, excess sweat, diarrhea, and/or irritability. It is, therefore, so important for Scorpio folk to come to the surface with scheduled regularity and gently detoxify so they don’t find themselves at a point when serious detoxification and intervention is needed having overworked their own inherent cleansing systems. While Scorpio folk tend towards chronic imbalances, they are extraordinarily sturdy and feisty fighters when it comes to regaining their health.

Scorpio folks can be tricky companions at times, but their friendship is well worth the effort, especially when clear boundaries of behavior are established. They teach us how to chase after the mysterious with ecstatic focus and to experience the mystical, rather than just reading about it. They can be persnickety and manipulative when out of balance and their ability to successfully but inappropriately control a situation stems from a twisted use of their gift of emotional intelligence (notice I wrote intelligence and not wisdom - that’s a mini Scorpio lesson for you). Yet, when they are in balance and behaving wisely Scorpio folk help to illuminate how our vulnerabilities make us that much more wise and how to use them as a compass for our own magickal adventures.

Scorpio Guardian Herbs

Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus)

Spiky and unexpectedly useful, Blessed Thistle is already distinguished as a Scorpio herb by the doctrine of signatures. Blessed Thistle has recorded use since ancient Greece and is a powerful bitter herb that awakens a damp and weak digestion (listen for sounds of gurgling as well as feelings of distention and flatulence). The herb is used as a treatment for malaria - malaria is caused by a parasite and parasitic diseases are fall under the sign of Scorpio. Blessed Thistle detoxifies drugs and alcohol from the body and has historic use by American Indians, such as the Quinault, as a contraceptive. The herb is an emmenagogue which also helps to bring on delayed menses and clears out excess phlegm and damp from the body, yet, it is not overly drying. In fact, Blessed Thistle, is far more regulating of bodily fluids and is a superb breastfeeding ally for supporting a healthy supply of milk.

The herb is also a nervine and can be used to relieve spastic pain and headaches, especially when brought on by nervous tension. The herb surrounds us in protective energy while helping us to clear out the muck, including brain fog, and reawaken our inner spark. Blessed Thistle can also help with the release of old emotions and it uplifts the spirits when taken over the long term (both useful and needed for Scorpio folk). The essence is particularly helpful in bringing wisdom from the ether into our physical reality. Topically, the herb can be used for boils, shingles, weepy eczema, and bleeding.

Scorpio Remedy Herbs

Wormwood via botanical.com

Wormwood via botanical.com

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

Parasitic diseases are often Scorpio imbalances and Wormwood is a powerful anti-parasitic herbal ally. It is a cleansing herb that should be used with respect and training. The herb is supremely bitter and excellent at expelling worms and parasites from the system. It is also a digestive herb when toxicity has built up in the gut and led to inflammatory diseases of the gut where infection is present. The herb can also be used when lack of appetite has become chronic, digestion is consistently poor, and there are signs of nervous exhaustion (which is why, in part, Wormwood has long been used in cases of anorexia). Wormwood clears persistent fevers, purifies the blood, and can help pull poisons from the body such as lead. The herb can also be used in the treatment of infertility, amenorrhoea, placental retention and after-birth pain. As a Scorpio herb, Wormwood is for when toxicity has built-up over a long period of time and it causing serious complications to a person’s health and wellbeing.

Wormwood also contains thujone which works as a brain stimulant but is also one of the reasons why the herb should be used by a trained herbalist and for a short amount of time in small doses since thujone can be toxic in large amounts. Externally, Wormwood can help treat fleas and lice as well as fungal skin conditions such as athlete’s foot. Use as a compress for bruises and joint pain.

Sun in Scorpio Flower Essence

Holly via wikipedia

Holly via wikipedia

Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

The flower essence of Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is one that I recommend particularly for those born under a Dark Moon in Scorpio which are folks who are typically deeply embedded in the part of Scorpionic nature that loves what is hidden and mysterious. Holly is, however, an equally important remedy for Scorpio Sun folk, helping them connect to others, warm up their sometimes cold and calculating persona, and help them develop a greater sense of compassion. The essence helps to release feelings of anger and envy towards others, especially when Scorpio folk feel they have been personally wronged and do not know how to move on or resolve the situation. Holly turns the heart towards love, especially when there is distrust, and I recommend that Scorpio folks not only use it internally, but as an external body wash and home spray to help soften their tough exterior. Holly softens the outer shell of Scorpio folk and helps to let the love in.

The Sun in Libra

Lovely Libras! They are the keepers of beauty and the cultivators of pleasure in the zodiac, guarded by the sensuous planet of Venus. Libra folk generally place great emphasis on the interpersonal - whether romantic, familial, or in friendships. Libra folk can often be the most graceful of the zodiac if not physically, than socially and intellectually. The scale is the symbol of this sign and Libra folk place great emphasis on fairness, diplomacy, and that everyone getting their equal share.

The great strengths of Libra can also be their great downfalls. The impossible mission of complete impartiality and the belief in objectivity can keep them from recognizing that the path of wise relationships is built on empathy and effective boundaries. They can easily get caught up in bending over backwards in attempts to be fair, forgetting or not developing their own sense of what they want and who they are in the world. Such dissipation of energy and focus on others can lead to an ungrounded airiness that leads to indecision, lack of focus, and a muddled heart. Attempts to please others can be taken advantage of and their autonomy lost if a Libra folk’s sense of love is compromised. It is all too easy for Libra folk to doubt that they deserve to be loved as much as they love others. It is key for Libra folk to realize what healthy relationships look like, detox from codependent tendencies, and develop a fierceness of judgement. Their desire for fairness and diplomacy can then transform into something more powerful: harmony.

Since they are guarded by such a beneficial planet, Libra folks can be a bit lucky and a lot blessed. Sickness is rare for many Libra folks. They do tend towards the sweeter things in life and can be more prone to sugar addiction and complications including diabetes, unwanted weight gain, and compromised immunity. As they are pleasure-seekers who tend to get away with a lot of poor eating and health habits early in life, it is very important to know that later in life is when their bad habits will often catch up them. They can get caught up in cycles of addiction, especially in regards to sex and alcohol, in an attempt to find an outlet for their energy. Since they are a sign that can tend towards lack of self-interest, they can disregard the need for personal health practices, such as exercise, which is such an important activity for Libra folk to do in order to express their physical energy (even though they can sometimes come off as a low-energy sign). Find pleasurable movement to keep you healthy and well, Libra folks, and indulge! The gifts of Libra folk is that they are creatures of beauty, teaching us how to find and experience beauty in all parts of our lives.

Libra Guardian Herbs

Passionflower by Oliver P. Quillia

Passionflower by Oliver P. Quillia

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)

Passionflower is a lovely herb that has both Venusian energies (the Guardian planet of Libra) and energies of the Moon. The herb is primarily used as a relaxing sedative, calming the mind and soothing the nervous system. It cools the hot-blooded, including gently lowering blood pressure, and relieves migraines, tension, and asthma brought on by heat. Spasms, tremors, hiccups, and convulsions caused by tension and over-excitation are all remedied by Passionflower. Passionflower is a great remedy for overworkers and those who have difficultly taking a genuine break or rest - the herb helps them connect to the Libran desire for beautiful rest in their lives. Speaking of beautiful rest, Passionflower is excellent for those who struggle with insomnia, restoring us to restful sleep pattens and helping us to wake up refreshed. Similar to Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), Passionflower helps relieve the constant chatter of a busy brain and at the same time can increase focused calm. Upset and teething children can be soothed by Passionflower’s anodyne qualities (consider using with Chamomile Matricaria recutita if upset tummies are also a problem) and it’s antispasmodic qualities relieve hacking coughs or asthma attacks in both adults and children.

Since it is cooling and dissipating, Passionflower can be used in cases of fever and inflammation of all sorts, including earache, eye inflammation, and toothache. The herb is useful for heavy menstruation and cramping, as well as easing difficult labor pains and contractions. Emotionally, Passionflower is a great ally to have around during nervous breakdowns and healing crisis where emotions are raw and anxiety is high. It helps to calm and re-balance through alleviating emotional confusion.

Libra Remedy Herbs

Ashwagandha by Wowbobwow12

Ashwagandha by Wowbobwow12

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is an herb that has been used for thousand of years within Ayurvedic medicine and is an excellent adaptogenic herb. Adaptogens in general, could fall under the umbrella of “Libran Remedy Herbs” because Libra guards homeostasis which adaptogens are so effective at bringing us back to. Since Libra has dissipating energies because of its planet Venus, the sign can tend towards general weakness and slow recovery time after illness. Ashwagandha is a supreme restorative, rebuilding strength and stamina in the body. Libra is also an air sign and when air is askew it can lead to muddled thoughts, poor memory, and difficultly learning. Ashwagandha restores mental clarity and prepares the mind for learning. It is useful in the treatment of learning disorders and conditions such as ADHD.

Additionally, Ashwagandha is a immunostimulant and is especially effective at increasing the effectiveness of a chronically underperforming immune system including conditions such as HIV, MS, lupus, and fibromyalgia. The herb can also be taken alongside antibiotics to protect the immune system and promote a healthy recovery from illness. Like other Libran herbs, Ashwagandha promotes fertility, balances menstruation, and has an affinity for the urinary system.

Chicory by Alvesgaspar

Chicory by Alvesgaspar

Chicory (Cichorium intybus)

While Libra is a sign that can be the most magnanimous and desirous of love and a multitude of loving relationships, they are a sign that come become uncertain if they are loved when they fall out of balance. Balance is so important to our Libran folk, but sometimes the idea of maintaining balance is confused with always being fair or never experiencing conflict. Patterns can appear in their lives which have them questioning those they are in relationship with (wether a romantic, parental, or friend relationship), if they are really loved. Their need of reassurance becomes burdensome and problematic, which is when the flower essence of Chicory becomes indispensable. Chicory is the “unconditional love” essence. It is good not only for out-of-balance Librans but for folks who have truly experienced a lack of love and care in their life, which leads to being able to love oneself. Chicory helps us to connect to our self-love and to accept the love of others without the constant fear of love being lost. Chicory teaches us that, yes, love does transform and is transforming, but it can never be lost.

The Sun in Virgo

Stubbornly kind might be one of the most succinct way of describing Virgos. I think it is interesting to know that the Virgin has not always been the default symbol of Virgo. Judith Hill has pointed out that the one of the alternatives to the symbol of the “Virgin” for Virgo was that of the donkey (blessed be the Sacred Donkey of Holiness). I agree with her, that the donkey, which is a highly intelligent, herd-oriented animal that is stubborn and ready for challenge describes Virgo better than that of a mystical virgin. Not because a virgin is any less powerful or clever, but because there a virgin is a person “unto themselves” while most Virgos, even through their stubborn grumpiness, are far more community-oriented.

I think many Virgos are identified as and would self-identify as introverted, but I think there is something a little more complicated going on. First of all, none of us are solely introverted or solely extroverted - we’re all some sort of mix, no matter how slight. Instead of understanding introverts and extroverts as “the quiet ones vs the loud ones” I think it is more useful to understand where each seeks recognition or feedback most of the time. Introverts are often more directed to seek inner feedback and self-recognition, or those same things from a much smaller group of people, whereas an extrovert often seeks feedback and recognition outside of themselves or from a much larger group of folks. So how does this tie back into our beloved Virgos? Virgo folk can appear to be introverted since many tend to be more quiet (initially, at least, when meeting them), but because of their community-bound loyalty, they act far more like extroverts when seeking feedback, recognition, and satisfaction with self. Such a disposition is part of the reason Virgo folk make such good community healers, organizers, and heart-centered rabble-rousers - they feel deeply and are acutely aware of the needs of others at the same time. They get in trouble when they misplace their loyalty, overcommit, and feel a lot, but don’t take time to really understand what they are feeling.

Virgo folk have to be very conscious of not getting in their own way. They can be detail-oriented to a fault, have difficultly seeing the broader vision, and let their stubbornness turn into stonewalling. They have to learn how to be flexible, give way, let go, and be gentle with themselves as much as they are to others in their most centered moments. Once they get over their skepticism and tone down their cynicism, their magick can finally have enough space to unfold. For Virgo folk teach us how to create the healing temples and spaces we so desperately need in these times of growing complexity and conflict. They remind us, as wisely mutable earth signs, to come home to ourselves again and again, wherever that home may be.

Within medical astrology Virgo folk need to be very conscious of their digestive help and paying attention to their second “belly brain.” A disturbed digestive process, from missing a meal or chronic issues of malabsorption, can lead to disease and illness. Virgo folk need to provide themselves with the same healing and attentive care that they provide others in order to experience longevity. The sign does have a tendency towards melancholy and retention of emotions, so making sure that they are practicing regular release-oriented activities in their life (whether exercising by spending time in the woods or a beautiful city park or regular therapy). Good food choices are paramount. The gifts of Virgo folk are discerning what we really need in a noisy world, practicing balanced selflessness in service of others, and living the wisdom that Sweet Honey in the Rock has so succinctly summarized, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Virgo Guardian Herbs

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Many Virgo herbs are fragrant and sweet with just the right amount of bitter and usually containing a high volatile oil content. They are herbs meant to sweeten the disposition as well as the digestion, which Fennel does very well. A classic carminative, Fennel soothes inflamed intestines, alleviates nausea, clears toxins from the gut, and relieves cramping. Chew the seeds after meals to relieve flatulence and distention of the gut because of gas and irritation. For those with sluggish and stagnant digestion (which can be brought on by the tightening and dampening effect of the Tense tissue state that Virgo folk are prone to), Fennel can help to reignite the digestive fires.

As a sign of Mercury, Virgo guards our body’s physical intelligence, including the second brain in our gut as well as our consciousness filter or the brain settled in our skull. Fennel helps nourishes both brain centers by acting as a nervine on an overworked nervous system (and it is very, very common for Virgo folk to be overworked).

Fennel also supports the gift of Virgo folk which is learning how to be a source of nourishment for others within a balanced and healing context. One way that Fennel does this in the body is by supporting breast/chest feeding by increasing milk flow, alleviating mastitis and clearing out tension and obstructions in the body. Ultimately, Fennel is very calming and grounding and helps us to glow from the inside out.

Virgo Remedy Herbs

Lavender by Fir0002/Flagstaffotos

Lavender (Lavandula officinalis)

When Virgo folks feel out of balance, Lavender can be a great herb to help them find their center again. The herb reduces anxiety, soothes the nerves, alleviates agitation, and has an overall calming effect on the mind, body, and spirit. While Thyme is a warming digestive herb (discussed further in the full Virgo profile in the Lunar Apothecary), Lavender is a cooling digestive herb, when the digestion is too hot, leading to nausea, heartburn, and irritation of body and mood.

Lavender is similar to Lemon Balm (which we look at in-depth in the Lunar Apothecary) in its ability to uplift the mood and release poor self-esteem. It is excellent for stress and tension accompanied by headaches and migraines.  The herb is also clearing - clearing congestion from the chest, remnants of colds from the body, and brain fog from the head. The topical uses of Lavender seem endless and it fulfills its duties as a topical panacea well. The herb can be used for a variety of skin irritations such as eczema (a common skin complaint for Virgo folks), bug bites, burns, infections, varicosities, and acne. It relieves the pain of arthritis, bumps, bruises, and sprains, and it excellent in baths and steams. In mouthwashes it is great for infections of the mouth and throat, including tonsillitis and mouth ulcers.

Moss Agate is an earthy, grounding stone for our earthy Virgo folk. It enhances their ability to ground and, more importantly, re-connects them to their ability to ground when they are too caught up in their heads. Moss Agate is the security of forest floor and rock bed, breeding in our spirit a mobility of gentleness that allows our soul to move while still feeling secure. It is very useful for Virgo folks who have forgotten or denied their inherent earthiness. Moss Agate is especially good as dissolving the false dichotomy of nature versus culture. The essence is for when someone is afraid to come home again, helping them to re-connect to the gift of profound vulnerability.
